The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”

The blue bat looks so GOOD
bluesky is actually paying homage to an ancient internet tradition known as "signing off." it is a lost art, but people would "disconnect" and maybe return to the family computer after finishing dinner and homework
Happy #PortfolioDay? 😄 I'm a translator and editor working in Japanese>English manga and light novel localization! Always looking to offer my talents for new and exciting projects of all genres!

Here are a few books I've worked on in the past couple of years:
Would go for this...
A pane of the manga Otaku Elf. A girl is on the left side of the panel, with a tall speech bubble to her right. The text "Wow, Woofer?" is written in the middle of the bubble. The upper left border of the bubble has a hand-written piece of text in Japanese. The lower left border of the bubble has the english text "Yay!"
Reading order is more important than 1:1 placement fidelity with stuff like asides. Reading Japanese from right to left makes it clear that the aside comes second, but the English text is concentrated in the middle of the bubble on a vertical scale. Moving the aside down keeps the order clear.
(I've been a casual fan of Orange Lounge from my old Bemani gaming days, and I've been a Swing Out Sister fan for many years, but I was not aware of this cover until just now! I did know that they had some brief popularity in Japan though, so while it caught me off-guard, this somehow makes sense)
Got a genuine jump scare from this- I was listening to an Orange Lounge compilation on YT, and then this started playing and I thought to myself, 'ha, you know these opening licks sound like Break Out,' then kept listening and thought 'wait...a sample?' But then...

I still adore this piece! You captured their whole personality SO perfectly!! The pose and the color palette and the overall rendering is just so divine (and I love how you drew their own, too)! I'm so thrilled to have gotten you as a match <3
A drawing of Waltz' Bard/Warlock OC Marilla standing on a balcony. They are leaning back against the railing and smiling upward, behind them an owl, their familiar, is flying by. A wide forest glowing orange from sunset light. Their clothes are colorful and bedazzled and their hair, orange with white highlights, is being blown about in the wind. They have rosey pink shades on
Todays #repostyourart theme is "Autumn!" here's an illustration I made of @laiska.bsky.social 's OC Marilla! It was actually for a spring art exchange but it feels more autumn-y to me....
Things I never expect to be doing in research for work: watching videos of Ronald Reagan on 2x speed
(I love miman's writing. I love these girls so much, augh!)

Apparently!! I turned in volume 13 in August 2024...
(Yuri is My Job 14 is finally underway, haha~)
When it's been a year and a half since you last translated a volume of a series and you can't remember any of the characters' names... Who are all you girls again...
big ups to Janet Hsu for writing this and changing my brain chemistry when I was just starting out in games and causing me to go out and try to become trilingual. news.capcomusa.com/lets/browse/...
Directly translating removes the original intent of the text and can easily result in mistranslations. Localization by experienced and professional translators and editors results in better translations.
subway ad that says "your idea could be live by the time you reach your stop"
as a culture we have really given "ideas" way too much credit. ideas are a dime a dozen. they happen all the time. the magic is way more in the doing, and the doing's diminished stature is linked to lack of respect for labor and, more recently, skill and expertise.
I mean, they're vitamins, do they really expire...
That's -Dr.- Circle Journey to you...
That's so exciting though, congrats!! What a trek to get here finally
Hey!! So it looks like I've got a gap in my schedule coming up, so if you ever wanted to hit up your boy for manga lettering work (or comics, in general!) now is the time 👀
This would've been the ideal thing to do! Or at the very least if they wished not to continue my services they could have in fact let me know this.
Yeah aha...
My first notice about this only came from -another freelancer- who contacted me asking whether the series was worth taking on, apparently having been approached about taking it over and not knowing why it was being transferred
Shoutout to a certain company, who, when I said that I needed either a short hiatus or longer deadline for a series I had already TL'd almost 20 volumes of because I was getting severely burnt out, simply reassigned the series and dropped me from the roster without so much as a farewell 🙃
Some people may believe freelance should only be a side job, but we're expected to be available on call for simulpubs and to give fast turnarounds on other work as though we're full time. If we say we can't, we're taken off the series or the offer gets rescinded
