As part of its genocidal campaign in Gaza, Israel has so far killed 20,000 Palestinian children and damaged or destroyed 85%+ of schools. UN experts have called it ‘scholasticide’.

Thank you to teachers’ union NASUWT NI for the opportunity for Amnesty to speak at their annual conference today.

The First Minister and deputy First Minister have had a comprehensive research report - with clear recommendations for a public inquiry and a raft of safeguarding measures - since summer 2025.

But still no decision. Meanwhile, new stories of abuse within churches emerge on a regular basis.

A clerical child abuse inquiry for Northern Ireland is long overdue.

This week, Amnesty International's Patrick Corrigan joined victim/survivors Nikella Holmes and Anthony Gribben to give evidence to the Executive Office committee at the NI Assembly.

Patrick Corrigan, from Amnesty International, said the “new Taser 10 electro-shock weapon carries significant new risks, with the potential for serious unintended injuries”. “A weapon that can fire ten times carries a real risk of overuse and serious injury,” he said. “The longer, faster-firing barbs raise the possibility of serious unintended injuries, particularly for children, who may face a heightened risk of facial or eye injuries.” Mr Corrigan said calling the new weapon ‘safer’ is “misleading”. “Amnesty International recognises that the police have a duty to protect the public and themselves from harm,” he said. “However, we have serious concerns about the use of Tasers, including the rise in their use by the PSNI over the past year.” Mr Corrigan urged the Policing Board to limit the use of Tasers. “With the introduction of this new Taser, the Northern Ireland Policing Board should, at a minimum, ensure that the PSNI ends the use of this electro-shock weapon against children, in compliance with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child’s repeated recommendations,” he said.
