Politechs Episode 4 - Writers - Foz Meadows Josh and Ray talk to science fiction and fantasy writer Foz Meadows.

Foz Meadows joins us to discuss his "Against AI" polemic, the sheer stupidity of thinking we can outsource the act of thinking to machines that do not think, and the role that science fiction and fantasy writers have to play in resisting the inevitability narrative: politechs.dev/episodes/s02...

Politechs Episode 3 - Datacentres - Aurora Gómez Delgado Josh and Ray discuss datacentres in the age of AI with Aurora Gómez Delgado.

Datacentres might seem boring, but Aurora Gómez Delgado of Tu Nube Seca Mi Río explains how they are stealing water and energy, and what that means for growing crops, people trying to pay their electricity bills, and the availability of clean drinking water. politechs.dev/episodes/s02...

Automation of targeting decisions for the express purpose of making them faster... what could go wrong?

"Computer says kill" is the ultimate accountability sink.

Yeah, these are exactly the things we've been thinking through over the past couple of years. I hope you'll find the discussions this season interesting, and I appreciate the dialogue. One of our goals is to get nuanced, difficult, good faith conversations going.

Will do!

The open training data is a hard requirement for me (as you know from our conversation about my Quixotic search for a STT model 😅). I think open weights are a good idea, but they wouldn't be a requirement for me personally *using* a model in a low-stakes environment.

We're gonna discuss it for sure!

Is the bet on whether we discuss it, or whether we come to the same conclusion as you? 😅

Do you have anything you can point at that expands on what you're advocating for? It would be really useful for thinking through the pros and cons of small models.

By the way, Dr. Bender, we would absolutely love to have you and/or Alex on the podcast to discuss how your framing of LLMs and "AI" has been evolving from the Stochastic Parrot onwards.

Thank you so much! The discussion with Anthony was great, and I love how he worked in not only your and Alex's automation framing, but also used your great "synthetic text extruding machines" nomenclature, which I fell in love with the first time I heard it. 😍

Make sure you stick around after the credits to hear Lauren's wonderful reading of Anthony's essay. 😀

Thanks again for giving us permission to include it in the episode, Lauren!

I'm not sure who the "they" is here, but if "they" is us, you may well lose your $5, because we'll be exploring the possibilities of using small models toward the end of the season, as we struggle with the question of whether this technology is redeemable in any way. Stay tuned!

Make sure to hang on until after the credits to hear Adolfo's wonderful reading of the Portuguese translation of Anthony's essay! 🤩

Thank you! We're hoping to also do an episode on love towards the end of the season.

Speaking of teaching through the muck, we have an episode coming later in the season on the effects of LLMs in primary schools.

Don't hold back, Foz, tell us what you really think! 😉

@edwardongwesojr.com has talked about how they're effectively trying to recreate the plantation economy.

I think looking at anything through the lens of how it affects workers is a powerful analytical tool.

Oh, wonderful! Would it be OK to DM you to work out the details?

We really need to interview a librarian for the show! If you or anyone else reading this knows a librarian who wants to talk about how AI is affecting libraries, please put them in touch!
