It's baffling, he wrote a non woke fantasy novel about a tired old conqueror who wants redemption for his horrible crimes, then filled the book with how he was actually right and a lot of it wasn't his fault and since he feels bad about the rape people should forgive him and get over it.

From the sounds of things, judging by his light/dark concept of evil and good, Shad is the kind of guy who would flex his power and authority and control over women then be utterly confused why he's being accused. "I would NEVER," but he's thinking a dark alley and a gun, not "I'm your boss"

Darkblade was fucking pureile and stupid but goth Goku was never sadistic. The time he spends on charity and kindness was awful storytelling but it tells you the writer gets human connection even if he can't recreate it in prose. That's endearing! I just wanna ruffle that book's hair.

Shad's protagonist (and Shad) just seems to think rape is a act of evil only bad people do, which makes his total apathy to banal suffering bizarre. Rape is a crime that gives permission for violent revenge fantasy on those who "deserve it." He's a local news comments section with a sword.

As bad as Darkblade was, I kinda feel a fondness for it because its insane gender politics are clearly from incompetence. Dude wanted to be Berserk and he landed in "Murata's nephew with a box of crayons."

Shad is different because all the revulsion to rape is because women to him are property

Shad is also doing my favorite bad writer cliche of "the main character is older than they seem" and then since they don't grasp weariness or wisdom, they just act like the 30 year old fuckhead writer would. Being old and frail taught him nothing about strength being fleeting, I guess.
