The dates are important. Canadian nationality came into force in 1867. Before that people in Canada were British Subject Status. If this ancestor was born in Canada after 1876 or before 1876 but living in Canada in 1867 they would’ve obtained Canadian nationality. Dox back every generation to that /

French Canada was luckily very meticulous about record keeping (through baptisms) so it’s not too difficult to find the documents when you try.

It depends how important Canadian identity is to you. I would caution not talking about Canadian nationality to Canadians as a tool to be used (even if true). Sites as far as genealogy records? I requested them directly from counties in the US and local relevant archives in Canada. It’s always helpful and necessary to get Canadian copies of the information when it exists. That always holds more weight than US data/originals.
