It's really annoying when someone schedules a call with me and it just gets added to my calendar as "call with Jeff"

Maybe no one will appreciate this, but FYI, RGB "primaries" aren't physically fundamental. It's fundamental to a TYPICAL human eye. Red+green light don't make yellow. Red+green FOOL normal eyes into seeing yellow. Same with paints. A minority of us aren't tuned to RGB, and the illusion doesn't work.

So, it's quite the moral litmus test whether, when we look at systems as they are, we say "this must improve!" vs. ask "what's my retirement calculus?"

If anyone is looking for a Canadian whisky that works as a bourbon substitute, may I recommend Signal Hill.

For better or worse, the media was in your hands. The tangible is a bygone era.

When someone writes "LOLOL..." are we supposed to read it as "laugh out laugh out loud" or "laugh out loud out loud"?

Not many people know this, but if you want computational simulations of block copolymer microphase morphology, I'm your guy.

On a basic level it would be wonderful to know how many Americans want gas prices going back to reasonable vs. how many wanted a leadership change in Iran? Even then, one that puts someone even more "radical" in charge than before?

Hey "no more foreign wars" contingent, did you seriously want this?

Can I make a suggestion? Bag of Ripples all-dressed, bottle of Grace's hot pepper sauce. One drop per chip. Give it a try.

NATO is a defence pact. (See: Article 5 activation on Sep 11, 2001.) It was never a commitment to back aggression of a participating member. To frame this as a failure of NATO is to not understand NATO.

There's a certain charm in having an algorithm so opaque it can't be gamed.

If I remember correctly, even merely THREATENING to destroy civilian infrastructure to force compliance is a war crime.

Billion dollar idea: idontknowwhatdoyouwant.com. It tracks your food preferences and order history (UberEats, groceries, etc.), and when trying to decide what to have for supper with someone else, makes suggestions.

Random reflection: in 1986 give or take, I wrote a story for my creative writing class about a dystopian future where we don't have to leave our house since all needs are met by automated delivery/pickup. The main character dies & no one notices. My fictional service was called Aladdin, but still...

The story he hears is it's a paid protest funded by counter agents. Since Trump has needed to fill seats at "rallies" with paid attendees from Craigslist in the past, it doesn't occur to him that people attending in opposition may do it solely on the basis of conviction not promise of compensation.

When a scientist is married to a scientist for long enough, you get questions like this:

"Is the measure of my accuracy monotonically declining of late, or still within tolerance of noise variations?"

Was using AI to satisfy some academic curiosities about life insurance law, and it kept redirecting me to help line resources. Fun times.

A Q over the years: "if you could have supper with anyone, living or dead, who?"

My usual answer: Carl Sagan, an inspiration and, in a not-too-different life, he could've been a mentor.

But recently, I realise the answer that rings truest to me is simply: my grandmother. 20y later, miss you still!

Apropos of nothing, have you noticed that Trump's thumb posture is always lacking in his "thumbs up" gesture?

During a particular high school geography midterm in the 80s, my teacher sat at the front of the class clipping his toenails. It still haunts me to this day.

The "singularity" is allegedly when AI has sufficient self-augmentation to exceed human intelligence. But human intelligence is not a singular threshold. There has to be a short but continuous time where AI is smarter than stupid people yet "stupider" than smart people. What shall we call that?

So on a scale of 1-5, how dissatisfied are you with satisfaction surveys? 5 being "most dissatisfied" and 1 being "most satisfied"?
