omg, this! I struggle with getting students to explore anti-abortion thought seriously, anti-suffrage thought seriously, anti-vax thought seriously. My famous refrain in all of my classes is, "We have to take our historical actors seriously!"

I think this is one area in which historical materialism really shines - you are not called simply to refute a perspective, but to explain how it expresses a class interest and subjectivity. It is not enough to merely state "this is not what I believe, and it is wrong because x and y".

screenshot from linked to essay that reads:
Some of the articles I just cited make the case that there are no universal sex differences. For instance, many species that sexually reproduce don’t even make differently sized gametes (i.e., they are isogametic). Furthermore, anisogamy appears to have evolved from isogamy independently numerous times (Gorelick et al., 2017; Henshaw et al., 2023), which means that all females and all males across species do not share a common origin. Furthermore, there is evidence that anisogamy may have first evolved in hermaphroditic species who produce both eggs and sperm, rather than in dioecious species that have separate female and male sexes (Henshaw et al., 2023; Iyer & Roughgarden, 2008). Or as we say in evolutionary biology, dioecy (two separate sexes) may be the derived state, at least in some species, which would render the notion of universal maleness and femaleness even less tenable.
In their article, “No universal differences between female and male eukaryotes: anisogamy and asymmetrical female meiosis,” Gorelick et al. (2017) chronicle how gametes are extremely diverse across species, and that there are exceptions to every commonly cited distinction between eggs and sperm (e.g., large versus small, immobile versus motile). Gorelick and colleagues conclude: “Therefore, currently, there are no universal criteria for distinguishing females from males across all animals, across all plants or across all stramenopiles, let alone across all eukaryotes.”
In other words, much to gender-critical activists’ chagrin, gametes are actually a part of natural variation and sex diversity, rather than the antithesis of it.

...I discuss the strategy behind what I now call "gamete trutherism" & why this approach is inherently anti-feminist. but I also provide scientific evidence explaining why there is no universal maleness & femaleness, plus gametes themselves are quite diverse... juliaserano.medium.com/why-are-gend...

Why Are “Gender Critical” Activists So Fond of Gametes? plus my new video “Trans People and Biological Sex: What the Science Says”

preparing to give another Trans People & "Biological Sex" talk, so I though I'd re-up this – it's an in depth primer on why anti-trans groups have become obsessed with gametes & why the actual science does not support their claims (no paywall): juliaserano.medium.com/why-are-gend...

Ultimately, what remains clear under all this weight is that genocide is not an event to be treated as passing news, but a wound in the very meaning of humanity itself.

Freedom here is not an abstract idea, but a real test: does it remain a value defended for everyone, or does it become a diminished meaning when some are excluded from the basic right to life?

In a time of genocide, all the familiar frameworks we use for discussion, art, or disagreement begin to shift
It is no longer about individual stances or cultural differences, but about a stark human threshold where everything is measured against respect for human life, dignity, and the right to exist

I assume I don't need to say this but if you start deadnaming and misgendering trans people because you don't like their politics I think you should share a space in the ditch along with the rest of the fascists.

I just think young men are taken more seriously in this way and so more quickly seen as aberrant freaks. anorexia is a horrible illness that mostly effects women, worse than anything Clavicular does to himself. and the girls facing it are not trotted out and laughed at because they're so weird
