Now that the thesis is submitted, the next 6 weeks are all drafting my queer Quaker introduction to the Bible. It's thrilling to be writing in a different register, one where I get to be a bit more passionate and conversational. #Writing #WritingCommunity #theology

The spiritual heritage of Quakers is both distinctive and intriguing. Friends are not easily categorized, as they express a diverse range of beliefs and practices, from Evangelical Christians to Buddhists, Pagans, and Non-theists. Their origin within English Puritanism suggests a Reformed Protestant orientation, but some aspects of their faith look more Catholic.

It's been a week of conferences. I had the honour of giving the post-graduate response to Prof. Robert Beckford's presidential address at SST, and then gave a very well received summary of my PhD thesis at a Quaker Studies student day. After all that I'm super tired but my spirit is full full full!

I respect anyone trying to be happy and make a living in the current global horrors, but I've got to say I get an ick at "this is Native Welsh Traditional Wellbeing" and what it primarily seems to be is...Yoga?

[The clearness Meeting is] a small group practice that aims to uphold and support a Friend seeking clearness about an issue. The purpose is not for the committee to try and come up with a solution. Instead, they seek to enable the individual to think more deeply about the matter under divine guidance.

All bloody principles and practices, as to our own particulars, we utterly deny; with all outward wars and strife, and fightings with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretense whatsoever; this is our testimony to the whole world.

The UK must immediately and unequivocally suspend support for the US military.

The Government have tried to appease him, then they tried to say they're standing up to him.

Words aren't enough - it's time for action.

Enjoying my annual tradition of watching Easter Parade. It's a bunch of silly nonsense of course, but I can't get enough of Ann Miller, including her colour combos: orange dress against a purple sofa, yellow gloves against teal curtains. What any of this has to do with Easter I couldn't say.

THE PASCHAL HOMILY OF ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOM
Is there anyone here who is a devout lover of God?
Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival.
Is there anyone who is a grateful servant?
Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord!
Are there any now weary with fasting?
Let them now receive their wages!
If they have toiled from the first hour, let them receive their due reward;
If any have come after the third hour, let them with gratitude join in the Feast!
And the one that arrived after the sixth hour, let them not doubt; for they shall have sustained no loss.
And if any have delayed until the ninth hour, let them not hesitate; but let them come too.
And the one who arrived only at the eleventh hour, let them not be afraid by reason of their delay.
For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first.
He gives rest to the one who comes at the eleventh hour, as well as to the one who toiled from the first.
To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows.
He accepts the work as he greets the endeavor.
The deed He honors and the intention He commends.
Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord!
First and last alike receive your reward; rich and poor, rejoice together!
Sober and slothful, celebrate the day!
You that have kept the fast, and you that have not, rejoice today for the Table is richly laden!
Feast royally on it, the calf is a fatted one

Let no one go away hungry; partake, all, of the cup of faith.
Enjoy all the riches of God's goodness!
Let no one grieve at their poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed.
Let no one mourn that they have fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave.
Let no one fear death, for the death of our Savior has set us free.
He has destroyed it by enduring it.
He destroyed Hades when he descended into it.
He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh.
Isaiah foretold this when he said,
You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below.
Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with.
It was in an uproar, because it was mocked.
It was in an uproar, for it was destroyed.
It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated.
It is in an uproar because it is now made captive.
Hell took a body, and it discovered God.
It took earth, and encountered Heaven.
It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see.
O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?
Christ is risen, and you, O death, are annihilated!
Christ is risen, and the evil ones are cast down!
Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice!
Christ is risen, and life is liberated!
Christ is risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ, having risen from the dead,
is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
★
To him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen!

Went to 2 of the 3 hours at the Cross at my local parish church, and cried through most of it. Now thinking of Mother Julian's words about the whole creation suffering with Christ, and Margery Kempe's gift of tears. The world I know has so little room for grief yet there's so much to grieve.

Recently I've started doing more one-to-one accompaniment of people exploring their faith and spirituality, and I can't express what an honour it is to do this work. To be present in a space where the love of God is so tangible is a wonder and a joy.

The Carpenter

From 'The Backwater Sermons' By Jay Hulme

He knew his son
would outshine him
from the beginning,

so taught this child the
only thing he could:

The skill of taking
blades and wood,

and turning death
into something
else entirely.

Another great Quake It Up video on a really interesting and important theological question that unprogrammed Quakers wrestle with. Our rejection of 'outward forms' doesn't mean we're free from outward forms. Our bodies are forms!

Apparently some chapters of my book "The Spirit of Freedom: Quaker-shaped Christian theology" are being officially recommended to help folk prepare for Britain Yearly Meeting in May. This is rather humbling, as I currently feel very unprepared!
