Common and distinct neural correlates of social interaction processing and theory of mind in narratives - Nature Communications Miao et al. find that recognizing social interactions in third-person narratives engages canonical brain areas subserving theory of mind. Using theory of mind recruits additional areas linked to action understanding.

Excited to share my first-author paper now out in @natcomms.nature.com (www.nature.com/articles/s41...)! Here, we asked whether verbal narratives about social interactions activate the same brain areas as audiovisual presentations, and whether they overlap with theory of mind (ToM). (1/11)

Is the โ€œstandard workflowโ€ holding back fMRI analysis?

Mass-univariate analysis is still the bread-and-butter: intuitive, fastโ€ฆ and chronically overfitted. Add harsh multiple-comparison penalties, and we patch the workflow with statistical band-aids. No wonder the stringency debates never die.

In advance of next year's (likely dire) job market, here are the 2024-2025 numbers from the psych job wiki: the overall number of tenure-track job listings in psychology and neuroscience fell slightly, from 860 to 822 (this doesn't include canceled searches, which are often not properly reported).

This! This the type of work that makes me so optimistic that the next 3 decades of brain research will be more impactful that the last for understanding/treating mental conditions. We finally have the right measurement tools & analyses (eg for emotion).

Slide from Gang Chen describing how he feels people should approach brain analysis in ways that increase transparency & reproducibility, focusing on encouraging people to share results with the uncertainty that accompanies our inferences.

"Highlight, don't hide" @gangchen6.bsky.social makes an impassioned argument that thresholding (reflective of a "binary" yes/no approach to analysis) holds back our science, making it less transparent and less reproducible.

Instead, be a facilitator - share uncertainty and evidence! #SANS2025
