The CDC has literally been gutted today.
There’s no need for “April Fools” when reality is a nightmare for every human on this planet.
Thousand of scientists fired.
Entire departments erased.

I used to laugh at the "I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread" Bilbo line, but boy do I get it now
If your argument is "sure, a terrible modern event has a parallel in the 1920s and 30s but don't worry we turned out just fine", might I suggest reading about the 1940s.
Hope y’all got your vaccines up to date.
God I f*cking love standardized file naming conventions.
Just checking…have you called your reps this week? Great advice from @emilyinyourphone.bsky.social !
“On Friday, February 7, 2025, at 11:59 pm (EST) all USAID direct hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and specially designated programs. Essential personnel expected to continue working will be informed by Agency leadership by Thursday, February 6, at 3:00pm (EST). For USAID personnel currently posted outside the United States, the Agency, in coordination with missions and the Department of State, is currently preparing a plan, in accordance with all applicable requirements and laws, under which the Agency would arrange and pay for return travel to the United States within 30 days and provide for the termination of PSC and ISC contracts that are not determined to be essential. The Agency will consider case-by-case exceptions and return travel extensions based on personal or family hardship, mobility or safety concerns, or other reasons. For example, the Agency will consider exceptions based on the timing of dependents’ school term, personal or familial medical needs, pregnancy, and other reasons. Further guidance on how to request an exception will be forthcoming. Thank you for your service”
USAID’s website has been deleted, all that is left is a note saying all personnel are now on administrative leave and personnel outside the US are to be brought home. Completely illegal, no act of congress or even executive order was signed to dismantle the agency
A line graph showing atmospheric CO2 levels at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1955 to 2025. The y-axis represents CO2 mole fraction in parts per million (ppm), ranging from 320 to 420 ppm, while the x-axis is years.
The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii.
@noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!
You say: they shutdown USAID.
You mean: they illegally broke in to a secure facility over a weekend, hijacked sensitive data on vulnerable people and US businesses, destroyed property Americans paid for, cut off resources for sick and hungry families, and fired Americans across the country.
The Senate phone system is crashing.
I don’t mean it’s busy or goes to voicemail—the recording stutters and sputters trying to keep up with the inbound call volume.
KEEP IT UP. Call both of your Senators. Say your name and that you’re a constituent. Leave a message. Demand action. Get angry.
This *cannot* be our only strategy Jfc @schumer.senate.gov - get in the FIGHT
Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository.
(The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)
Removing the clinical guidance on PrEP which is 99% effective at preventing transmission of HIV is morally reprehensible. Being able to prevent a disease that ripped through our community in the ‘80s and ‘90s with a single pill is a MIRACLE. I’ve never hated someone as much as I hate Donald Trump.
The CDC has removed clinical guidance on the use of #PrEP: www.cdc.gov/hivnexus/hcp...
@whitehouse.senate.gov as one of the biggest climate hawks in the Senate curious why you voted to confirm the nakedly pro-fossil fuel Burgum for Sec of Interior. Pretty shameful if you ask me.
I wonder if any lawyers are willing to take this on? Because I think a lot of us scientists would be willing to challenge these attacks directly with the right representation.
Handmaid’s Tale, here we come!
Curious then why you voted to confirm Doug Burgum as Sec of Interior? After denouncing him and his climate policies and his ties to the O&G industry. Make it make sense.
Kash Patel confirmation hearing: Dick Durbin asks Patel if he’s familiar with Stew Peters—a right-wing fringe conspiracy theorist. Patel: <long pause> Not off the top of my head. Durbin: You’ve made eight appearances on his podcast.
Checking in on Kash Patel’s confirmation hearing:
This is incredible.
HELLO! Call your reps. House.gov and senate.gov
I gave an interview to the BBC at midnight while the #LAfires were raging outside and I couldn't sleep. Turned into one of the most thorough and well-researched articles on wildlife and wildfire I've had the pleasure of contributing to.
Suffering under the weight of my inability to be clever and pithy lately. Gay brain wya?!
The same people wailing about DEI literally can’t spell their own job title.

From friends contending with the funding pause. These researchers are not getting paid due to these asinine policy changes. Call. Your. Reps.
Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent.
Opportunities are everywhere.
Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉
Howard Lutnick is in deep with crypto company Tether — aka “outlaws’ favorite currency.”
Tether financed North Korean nuclear weapons programs and Russian arms companies. Lutnick and his company made millions.
I have some questions for him.

Trump is offering all federal workers a buyout with seven months’ pay to shrink the government—but that’s not the whole story. Reports reveal some employees are being pressured to resign or face termination under the guise of organizational restructuring. In short: take the buyout or be fired.
