Headed to LA this weekend for @latimes.com Festival of Books!

What WILL kill good writing, music, and art is the cost of living. It's a political problem. Tech didn't create it and cannot solve it. Want good art? Housing for All. Health Care for All. Universal Basic Income. Then, creativity will flourish, no matter a flood of slop from the plagiarism machines
LLM #AI won't kill good writing or music or art. The money and the casual masses been rolling around in slop for a long, long time. Artists continue to create regardless. Because artists can't help it. And people without taste can't change that.
Thank you so much for sharing your time and your story with us! Check out Jamie’s memoir about how creating affordable housing is actually very possible here: www.ballastbookco.com/item/OwX-Svr...
Thanks to @ballastbookco.bsky.social for having me at #Bremerton First Fridays! Glad to have an excuse to ferry back across since completing housing for families exiting homelessness last December with Tony Ives and Kitsap Community Resources
See you this evening, Bremerton!
Classic #Seattle - wrong way driver nearly slammed into us at speed. Not sure we'd have survived. Then I get judged for honking. I am weary to death of you people and your irresponsible, unaccountable, dangerous culture. Go back to where you come from if you want to drive on the left, WASP.
And that solve crime thing is absolute bullshit. Our building management has delivered videos and names of break-ins, vandalism, and robberies, and SPD never follows up.
Man, #Seattle loves to hate my neighborhood substack.com/app-link/pos...
Three of Seattle's 35 homicides in 2025 were committed by Seattle Police. I've seen this story just about every year in the last decade. SPD pretty consistently commit a significant fraction of the murders in this town.
Their response alleges that I am anti-union. To be absolutely clear, my comment about a "jobs program" referred 100% to the PDA's excessive hiring and consulting overhead, not to construction labor. They don't even have construction.
Now they're accusing me of being anti-union, which is slander to the Boston-Irish. To be absolutely clear, my "jobs program" comment in this op-ed was 100% about the PDA's hiring record and its obligating millions in salary and consultants over its few years.
Wicked excited to share that I'll be reading at the @latimes.com Festival of Books on 4/18 www.latimes.com/events/festi...
Had a fantastic conversation about growing up in and later building affordable housing with Booked on Planning. Listen to it here www.bookedonplanning.com/podcast/epis...
Rendezvous just told me they'll have a keg of Kilkenny for our Irish Housing Happy Hour on Paddy's Day. This might be the only non-Guinness Irish beer available in Seattle. therendezvous.strangertickets.com/events/18296...
Join me on Paddy's Day at Rendezvous in Belltown for Irish music, drinks, and readings from Bittersweet Lane linking Irish history to our present day housing crisis in the U.S. rendezvous.squarespace.com/events/irish...
Yeah it's a shame I couldn't publish in another daily newspaper in Seattle.
"Seattle didn't vote for a jobs program or a nicer landlord. We voted to develop social housing." www.seattletimes.com/opinion/soci...
Tax billionaires out of existence.
Was it not always? Has been since before I was born, and I'm need-to-stretch-before-I-type years old
This is not a hypothetical fear. My piece focused on three countries — Brazil, South Korea, and Poland — where elected authoritarians were too blatant and their opponents did a good job persuading key audiences that the democratic threat was real.
The result, in each case, was authoritarian defeat.
Next redistricting we need to stop letting Queen Anne & Magnolia represent Downtown & Belltown
And if you want more of Katie's trying to prioritize right wing solutions on housing while sounding liberal, read this piece. www.thestranger.com/katie-wilson...
Pulling permanent housing money to other priorities to maintain budgets at SPD is exactly Sara Nelson.
I don't think she will. But I am horrified that she puts OH money on the table before sweeps and SPD money.
And on a personal note, the Mayor is wildly dismissive about the blanketing of my neighborhood with SPD cameras. "It's just 1% of the city," and a false statement that the cameras are limited to 3rd Ave. Good to know we're the chunk of the city that never counts in city hall.
Extremely telling when someone identifies with the cops and not the people struggling. Extremely telling when someone thinks it's ok to steal from perm housing to temp housing but can't imagine not throwing money at cops.
Woah. The mayor said some WILD things about housing and homelessness. The ambition on sweeps is to make “the experience of folks during encampment removals better” and redirecting money for affordable housing to shelter is on the table. These are Sara Nelson policies. What a disappointment
It is not desirable given the rate environment. It's a waste based on conventional advice learned under very different circumstances. And it's not like they are planning to build anything at all for several years. They are planning to give money to existing owners to take over existing buildings.
I guess it's 3 years on their powerpoint and 5 years from their CEO hire. Bonding comes at a high cost, especially in the current rate environment. That means that bonding the otherwise free to the developer social housing money diverts a large chunk of that money to pay bankers (their ROI)
