Why does everyday psychotherapy language feel both empowering and troubling?
TLDR: Because two practices are at play: mental health-speak, which empowers, and therapy-speak, which distorts.
A summary of our paper (w/ @almagro.bsky.social) in the great Imperfect Cognitions blog. 🙌
I’m sharing an interview I recently did for the APA blog. @vlc-lab.bsky.social @filolab.bsky.social

New paper accepted in Topoi!
Carmela Vieites and I argue that there's a risk in the literature of idealizing what hate speech is, and that such idealization must be resisted, especially for detection purposes.

Remember Jonah Hill asking Sarah Brady to stop modeling to respect his “boundaries”? Or an abusive boss recommending mindfulness after your complaints?
@almagro.bsky.social and I are now ready to tell you when and why therapy-speak might be wrong.

In the second part, we go further: the inherited notion of deep disagreement may actually conflict with central Wittgensteinian insights.
We suggest that the very idea of “deep disagreement” is, in an important sense, not really Wittgensteinian at all.
In the first part, we argue that Wittgenstein’s remarks on ethics and moral judgments are at odds with the inherited notion of deep disagreement.
Moral disagreements are neither discussions about standards or worldviews, nor unfailingly constrained by the parties’ standards.
Very happy to share that our paper “A Wittgensteinian take on moral vs. deep disagreements” has been accepted for publication in Synthese!

It will appear in the special issue “Wittgenstein and moral deep disagreements”

Worried about the overuse of terms like “gaslighting”, “boundaries”, or “trauma”?
@almagro.bsky.social and I are too. In this paper, we explore the epistemic and ethical cocerns of therapy-speak and how it relates to epistemic and affective injustice.
