Why should I get vaccinated if most people survive the disease anyway? 1. Because any number of deaths is worth preventing. 2. Because getting vaccinated also protects others. 3. Because dying isn’t the only risk. Many people who survive infections with illnesses like COVID-19 & measles live with long-term health consequences, incuding: COVID-19 Measles Deafness
Intellectual disabilities
Immune amnesia
SSPE, a progressive brain disease that is almost always fatal
And more Vaccines protect long-term health for you and others.

“Hardly anyone dies from that illness, so why is preventing it so important?” Any death is worth preventing if possible, and it’s not only about whether you live or die, it’s also about helping you and the people around you prevent severe health outcomes and live the healthiest life possible!

We are at this point in time, overrun with infections because:
1. We have never had the correct guidance in place on COVID. 6 years on and still no layered mitigations in places.
2. COVID vaccines were designed to reduce severity of infection, this wasn’t conveyed well to the public. And because 🧵

What If COVID Reinfections Wear Down Our Immunity? | The Tyee Dr. Anthony Leonardi is a lightning rod for debate. If he’s right, this pandemic poses a greater threat than widely assumed.

Dr. Leonardi on Covid, Sept 2020: “herd immunity does not exist.” Instead we’d get “endemic COVID where waves and waves of infection producing results five times worse than the flu.”
…new variants would get better at immune invasion & vaccines would not be able to prevent infection.

HE WAS RIGHT.

Measles has been eliminated in the U.S. since 2000. We have not officially lost that status, but sustained spread could change that. Elimination took decades of public health work. When measles returns, it is often the warning sign. If unsure, check your family’s MMR status.

The Schizophrenic Reality of a Pandemic That Never Ended Five years into COVID-19, the virus continues to disable millions. Yet, the world has decided to move on. Why is that?

Over half a decade in, and we're living in two realities about COVID-19.

In one: the pandemic is over, life is normal, nobody worries anymore.

In the other: 700,000+ daily infections in the US. 400 million people living with long COVID.\

Only one is right.

Long COVID caused $12.7 billion in lost U.S. wages from employee sick time in 2022, according to a University of Florida Health study.

• Individuals with long COVID missed more work, losing about 33 percent higher wages than those with COVID 19 without long term symptoms.

• The study used real world survey data from 2022 to estimate lost labor costs and emphasized long COVID as an economic challenge needing prevention and treatment investment.

Time to get this #LongCOVID trial utilizing @invivyd.bsky.social’s newest monoclonal, VYD-2311 out ASAP. I called on @NIH RECOVER-TLC to take this seriously last year and we have seen no movement on this obvious and innovative target. This can’t wait any longer.

Where is our collective outrage that we’re being harmed in healthcare settings?

Patients shouldn’t have to risk preventable infection that can result in death, disability, lost work time, harm to infected loved ones, &c.

As a HCW & patient, I want universal & permanent n95s in healthcare settings.

Inhumane and incredibly short-sighted. These meds keep people healthy and protect their partners and communities. This is a death sentence for people who can’t afford the meds ($20k plus per year) and will lead to more infections, more drastically altered lives, and more need for assistance.

According to The Guardian, Lawyers say they’re being blocked from seeing detained clients. DHS says that’s false...claims detainees have attorney access and “full due process.”

Here’s the problem: in a country of laws...this shouldn’t be a he-said/she-said. It should be VERIFIABLE.

Imagine if instead of reading about this in a British tabloid, you were hearing this from your concerned family doctor, who was also masked in an #N95, running an air cleaner in their consulting room, with the window slightly open (in wintry locales).

Imagine that.

And by "care" I mean with actions, not just "thoughts and prayers."
