A selfie of me and some of the undergraduate students in my group conducting a field survey of cover types in a marsh.
A view looking forward out of NASA's P-3 Orion aircraft during a flight over coastal Virgina. The edge of the Chesapeake Bay and a wetland are visible out the window.
I had an absolute blast severing as a Graduate Student Mentor for NASA's Student Airborne Research Program this past summer, and now applications are open for both mentors and undergrad student participants for summer 2025!

Bedforms? If it weren't for the jet engine I'd think I was looking at sand :)
If you come to watch the waves, stay off the beach, watch from afar. The tide will be rising into the evening and the swell continues to build.
The forerunners are arriving at Montara State Beach. About a 23 second period for this set of waves. Mavericks should be cranking this afternoon! #CAwx #waves

A satellite image of the shoreline in Monterey Bay, CA. White water from breaking waves along the shore is broken up by blue rip current channels. A black line along the boundary between the beach and the ocean shows a rhythmic sinusoidal like pattern with troughs aligned with the rip current channels.
Did you know we can see the fingerprints of rip currents from space? Well, we can now! Stop by our #AGU24 poster Monday morning to hear about the dataset we created using six years of PlanetScope imagery, which includes over 2,000 #CoastSat mapped images from three sites, and see what we learned :)
For those prepping Earth Science courses (or anybody who likes geology) --please check out my site www.geologypics.com to view and/or download Earth Sci images for free --all at resolutions good for power point. Site offers 5000+ images, all searchable. Here are three recent uploads.
Shell Game by Evan Ratliff is a great podcast series where he makes an AI assistant based on his voice and tries to have it do interviews for him. It was featured on Radiolab and is a look at the state of AI along this line of questioning.
If anyone knows beaches that have rip current embayment structures as large as they can get in Monterey Bay let me know, I am on the hunt!
