It’s Safe Place Selfie Day!
It’s important to be aware of what weather hazards could impact your area and where you would go in the event you need to shelter or evacuate! Don’t forget about your pets and to teach your kids!

We are asking anyone and everyone to participate! Think out of the box, make it fun. :)

For sure! Especially as we are forecast to get into El Niño later this year

Some perspective… this isn’t just happening in the western U.S.

From March 15 through March 26 there have been...
More than 100 monthly records & more than 700 daily records broken or tied.

Since March 1 there have been more than 1,100 daily records broken or tied across the nation.

Some record heat will remain through the weekend for areas of the Southwest.

Snowpack in Colorado is dismal... Snowpack in Colorado has already been low this season but an early spring heat wave has just worsened conditions.

Happy to share that I am writing in my off time again!

Hmmmm… not quite convinced this isn’t AI… except for the fact that that gif was so spot on 😂

Pretty cool and interesting! From a science/data stand point. From a human/ecological standpoint point definitely concerning.

How spring plant milestones are shifting in response to changing climate Across much of the United States, the first leaves and flowers of common garden plants are emerging earlier in the spring than they used to. It's a different story in the Southeast.

My last story from c.gov last year… probably would have written about it again this year… but you know.

Arctic sea ice has reached its maximum extent for the year, at 14.29 million square kilometers (5.52 million square miles) on March 15, edging just below last year’s record and statistically tying for the lowest maximum in the 48-year satellite record. @cires.colorado.edu https://bit.ly/4sBUe95

How climate change has powered the heat wave blanketing much of the U.S. A massive heat dome has been spreading across much of the United States this month, with temperatures reaching historic highs. But it's not an isolated spike. In recent weeks, the country has grappled...

🗣️"Every time we're using the word unprecedented or record, and it feels like it is getting a bit old to some people, but it is happening that frequently right now that we're pushing record highs to this level." - @bernwoodsplacky.bsky.social

🚨 It’s official: 2026 had the lowest annual maximum Arctic sea ice extent on record - essentially tied with last year’s record low.

Climate change is reshaping the Arctic, and it's all throughout the year.

This is a list of (some) locations that tied or broke their all-time *April* monthly temperature record in March 2026 during the record-shattering heatwave. Statistically and meteorologically, that is extraordinarily hard to achieve locally--let alone across such a vast region.

The heat didn’t just impact CO… it’s been very impactful across a large portion of the US.

I often see complaints about mets “hyping Heat” or “never” talking about record lows. Well look at the stats, they are pretty self explanatory.

Record highs are FAR outnumbering lows. It’s not hype. #facts

These snowpack stats are insane… truly…

We can see Longs Peak and Mount Meeker from our house and it’s been really weird to not see them both topped with snow for more than a couple days at a time this “winter”.

Really great thread on how critical the recent heat and extreme lack of snow this season could make for a really bad fire season this year. Take the time to read it.

It is going to get hot this week. 🥵

☀️ Temperatures will soar 20 to 30°F above normal making it feel more like early June than mid-March for many. Dozens of daily high temperatures records are forecast to be broken or tied this week.

Just “warmer” compared to the cold air coming in.

Your regular reminder that when folks say "its cold outside where I live, what happened to global warming?" that the world is big, and weather still exists.

The difference between cold rain, ice, and snow is very slim…

I am so incredibly tired of this “war” on climate and weather and research and science. If you don’t think these decisions are impacting you, I promise they are.

I'm not sure most folks are aware of the immense magnitude of loss this would entail for the global weather and climate community, and beyond. NCAR has played a greater cumulative role in advancing weather prediction and atmospheric modeling than perhaps any other single entity in the world.
