- to the manga panels i think that's an area you could try pushing further and seeing what you think. maybe a good way to check is to try covering the bottom half of your drawings' faces and deciding if the facial expression you want is still recognizable ?? Those are my unsolicited ideas

i think the above-the-mouth features (cheeks, eyes, eyebrows) tend to be the thing that causes people to perceive a ""dead inside"" smile, or to use the phrase "the smile did not reach his eyes" (meaning it was insincere). i personally think your kazuya's eyes look like he's smiling, but compared-

- that kazuya's eyebrows are raised very high and angled expressively... and we can't see his eyes, but i think they'd be similarly squinty to the second image... i wonder if playing around (in your own way) with that part of the face would help you get closer to your goal ??

LMAOOO OK THAT'S A FUNNY COMPARISON... and I See... i'm looking at the manga now.. i think with kazuya it's generally difficult because he does intentionally have a sort of uncanny grin. i personally think you did great with the mouth and capturing his wide, toothy grin, and i notice in the panels -
