Accessible Canada Act (January to December 2025)

    Approximately 222 inspections completed
    Received 518 inquiries
    0 complaints received and resolved

Note: In 2025, the only type of complaints that were eligible to be submitted to the Accessibility Commissioner were complaints related to harm people suffered because federally regulated organizations did not meet their requirements about accessibility plans, feedback processes or progress reports. As new regulations come into force, the grounds for complaints under the Accessible Canada Act will broaden.

Why You Need to Stop Using These Words and Phrases Language has long been used to dehumanize or marginalize people with disabilities. Ableist language shows up in different ways: as metaphors, jokes, or euphemisms. While ableism exists beyond the word...

More about ableist language:

"When you treat a disability as a joke, metaphor, or euphemism, you are causing harm... you are spreading the idea that it’s acceptable to dehumanize & stigmatize someone with a disability."

If You Care About Mental Illness, It's Time to Stop Saying "Crazy" and "Insane" There are plenty of English words that might adequately describe the current state of U.S. politics: "sensational," perhaps, or unbelievable, or absurd. Instead, on its new magazine cover, the Atlanti...

I really wish people could stop using ableist and sanist language to describe powerful people doing bad things, as it harms to people with mental health problems:

I asked the property manager to ask the contractors who installed it for source info, but I never heard back. That burlap was definitely treated with something. Fortunately it was just before the snows, so outdoor time and my exposures were reduced, altho winds still blew it to my door and windows.

I wonder about the threads, if during breakdown they could entrap or cut off circulation for little beings. Maybe more a concern with synthetics and hair that doesn't break, but some cotton is pretty strong too.

Some burlap was used near me last year, & it smelled like it had been dipped in petroleum or something!

If you can use well washed (with fragrance-free bio detergent) cotton sheets, they could be useful, altho if you are sensitive to moulds, there could be issues, but also so with leaf mulch.

"Normal" had left a lot of people under the bus.
Disabled people are still being left under the bus by everyone.
I wish people would start examining ableism, & stop using ableist language, as it harms everyone, not just disabled people.

Is the building being made in a way that people with chemical and environmental sensitivities can safely access?
Or are those with MCS/ES excluded again?

Canada sidesteps UN scrutiny over assisted dying ⋆ The Breach Calls by disability advocates and the UN to halt an expansion of medically assisted death have gone largely unacknowledged by the federal government

The UN released a scathing report criticizing Canada’s treatment of disabled people and expansion of assisted suicide.

What did Canada have to say for itself? Not much.

@spichaksimon.bsky.social reports on Canada’s silence in the face of criticism from the UN and disability advocates.

The Getting To Know Cancer project (maybe 10 years ago) did some great work showing how everyday chemicals that were not carcinogenic on their own, became carcinogenic when combined with other everyday chemicals.
I had really hoped for good change as a result, but as usual, industry blocks it.

A must read article!
..."MAiD was legalized and expanded based on the desire of some individual plaintiffs whose evidence could and should have been interpreted as a compelling case for the elimination of ableism rather than the creation of assisted suicide/euthanasia." ...

Dear God,
"When you treat a disability as a joke, metaphor, or euphemism, you are causing harm in a couple of ways. First, you are spreading the idea that it’s acceptable to dehumanize and stigmatize someone with a disability."

Please stop the ableism & ableist language.

Corporate tax loopholes and tax breaks, and billionaire tax loopholes and tax breaks are a far FAR far bigger problem.

Some religious institutions are just fronts for that BS, but others are actually doing survival assistance or social justice.

There are people doing that, but I am not following closely.

I have no influence over anyone who wants to vote for the Cons, and have limited spoons, so can no longer be a know-it-all 🤣
