Thank you for reading and go play Worms!

And an extra note: no, I didn’t use AI to write this; I just love me a good em dash every now and then. I hate AI, and if I can’t tell a heartwarming story about a game that meant a lot to me without AI, then it must not have meant much. Also my comma splices will tell you how stupid I really am.
Thank you Worms for being something unique, special, surprisingly deep, and endless both fun and funny. I hope to introduce you to my son someday soon.
Invite your friends over, turn it on, time out your first 20 turns, accidentally jump into water, misgauge the wind and blow yourself up with the bazooka, use the ninja rope to ricochet into oblivion, stand too close and get hit with backfire from the gun, and love your time together.
So that’s my monologue on Worms. The Armageddon Anniversary Edition is on sale, and it sparked me to want to reminisce on a game that had a profound impact on my high school circle of friends. Everyone should give it a shot. But REALLY give it a shot, not “give it a shot” in today’s standards.
Obviously, high school ended and we all moved on. But for my childhood best friend and I (love you Den), Worms was a staple. We’ve picked up almost all the Worms games since; and while none have kept the magic of that original run (how could it really), it’s a series we both hold dear to our hearts.
Cluster/Banana bombs almost always foiled my best laid plans. No matter how good any of us got, the randomness of the game always humbled you. I can’t really remember a time when any of ever got so good that it became boring to play each other. It had a balance with its jank that made it stand out.
It had this sort of punk rock, demo recording quality, but as a game. It was 60/40 if the physics would freak out using the grappling rope. I abused the hell out of girders to create fortresses (which probably would have been nerfed with modern day patches), but the chaotic physics of
An interesting side note, none of us were interested in tracking down sequels. We saw them in older magazines, thought the new weapons looked incredible, but ultimately didn’t care; we had Worms, and Worms was good enough.
We all loved Red Faction 2 and the Mario Party games, but Worms was special to us. No one else played Worms, no one else knew what Worms was, but everyone we brought to play Worms became a Worms fan. We were the gateway to the Worms epiphany, and all of our friends were welcome.
Worms became a staple at my house, for YEARS, amongst my friend group. And even when actual party games and competitive shooters were BOOMing on consoles, we were skateboarding during the day and at my house overnight having marathons of endless Worms matches.
Jump ahead to high school when I finally found my circle and gaming didn’t feel like a pariah activity anymore. I didn’t have an Xbox, so my house wasn’t the Halo house, but I had Worms; and I thought, “what the hell, let’s see if I can convert people,” and boy howdy, did I.
Ultimately, I found the limitation of its fun was that it was best with friends—of which I did not have a lot of at the time—and the ones I had hated the concept. So Worms when on my shelf as a fun game with a limited appeal. It had its moment in the sun, but I guess it wasn’t for people like me.
made the sale. I pop in the game and, if I’m being honest, barely understand what is happening. This is OG Worms for the record and way before being able to just pop an online tutorial. I scoured the manual, learned what I could, taught my uncle, and eventually we were having a blast.
Worms (PS1) was a birthday gift that wasn’t asked for, I didn’t know it existed, but my mom was clueless about what to get me and was doing her best. The clerk asked her, “does your son have Worms?” She was immediately mortified, but my mother thought it hilarious, took it in stride, and the clerk
As someone who had gaming introduced them in at a young age (2), who was also socially outcast and found them as escape for bully and torment through most of elementary-junior high school (though I adored academics), I want to try something new and shine a light on, in my opinion, overlooked games.
Also, I got a several laughs out of the demo, and I really hope that quality is something present throughout the whole game. #SarosParodoxSweep
I still think Saros will be my GOTY, even if GTA VI releases this year. Returnal was such an incredible experience, and Saros only looks to improve on that. With that said, Darwin’s Paradox’s art direction is wonderful and simple, yet enjoyable gameplay makes think it’ll be a top contender.
I know I don’t post much, and I’m super late the field as the game has already released, but the demo of Darwin’s Paradox is so damn charming and fun. I constantly joke with a friend that every game that releases with a score in the 70s is my new GOTY, and, well 🤷♂️.
I appreciate these weekly updates. As someone who loves skate., has it cratered as much as certain areas of the internet would have you believe, or, is it chugging along, just not making top 10/20? Assuming you can provide that information, that is.
