After coming off of Tales of Phantasia, these mf’s made something so unique and fun.
Your playthrough could go so many different ways due to character builds, story pathing, and party collecting.
Play Star Ocean on the SNES.
It’s fuckin’ good.

Another knock against FD cause the music sounds better to me in Stocean 1.
ESPECIALLY THE BATTLE THEME.
Another thing too, this 1996 hoe got VOICE ACTING and it’s good work where you can hear it.
Graphics are also so good the system STRUGGLES in the end to handle it all.
Love sprite flickering.

The world and exploration is so cool because it feels like one grand interconnected world. There is no “world map” but traversable set of screens that get you from one place to another.
The world feels so alive and interesting because of it.
Dungeons can get hella confusing tho…

The gameplay is still an “action” RPG but you mainly point an’ hit buttons to give your goobies commands.
However that never stopped this game from having spice and still making the experience interesting and fast paced.
Gameplay very good but very simple.

Finished OG Star Ocean and frankly, I’d happily put this up here as my favorite SNES title. Period.
Honestly makes me look at First Departure like a bit of a bastardization.
A port to make it more like SO2 but also make the game lose its charm and originality.
