It’s finally happened. After 18 months. Finally, a media merger you can root for.

Tice ‘happy to put things right’ after ‘he failed to pay £100k in corporation tax’ Mr Tice said last year Angela Rayner would resign if she had “any moral decency” after admitting to underpaying stamp duty

Richard Tice deputy leader of Reform ran four shell companies which did not pay any tax on profits between 2020 and 2022.

He's now offering to "put things right".

Go on then Richard - resign.

We should start removing the citizenship of weasels like this. If you don’t like paying your taxes and want to live in another country, fine, go, but you won’t be getting back in

I agree with Chris that Starmer spending 30k on a flat is a disgrace, whereas Boris Johnson spending £200k was of no interest, according to an article he wrote in 2021.

Farage and Kwarteng doing a Bitcoin deal has to sum up the sheer stinking rottenness of their brand of politics.

This is not democracy. It’s certainly not public service. It’s pure corruption. And repulsive, piss-taking greed.

Researchers Have Found a Dietary Compound That Increases Longevity A largely overlooked plant compound found in common fruits and vegetables is drawing new scientific attention for its potential effects on aging and brain health.

I think articles about scientific discoveries should legally have to a) say the kind species that the particular experiment was run on in the headline, and b) use a picture of that species as the main image.

In this case, it's not humans.
It's not even mice.
It's woims.

The real lesson is not that Orbanism doesn't work
- it plainly does, for a while. It is good at arousing tribes, at winning elections. The neverending wars, the mass-production of enemies, is custom-made for the social media era. And in Orban's defence the problems he pointed to were real.
People do want to see borders protected; they do look to the nation state for protection. They do worry about globalist elites. All populists need to succeed is for centrists to obsess about them -
and not the voters. Hungary had this for too long: dire alternatives to Orban.

Ivan Krastev and Stephen Holmes, in their brilliant book 'The Light That Failed', offered a memorable description of the Orban method.
While Hungarian liberals were preoccupied with rights, checks and balances, Orban was interested in using power to upend the political order. While they wanted to win arguments, he wanted to win elections. His passion for football, they wrote, taught him that what matters in any contest is killer instincts and unwavering loyalty. It is a recognisable portrait - and not only of Orban.
This is the mentality now on offer from populists across the West. It carries a certain charisma. But in Hungary, where it has been tested longest, the people have now seen through it. Orban's model did not produce prosperity, or demographic renewal, or cultural revival. It produced a mafia state dressed up in the language of civilisational struggle. The same formula is now being marketed in Washington, in London, in Paris, in Berlin. Hungarians have just provided the consumer review.

Again from Nelson - wise caution against liberal triumphalism. I probably don’t agree with Nelson’s answer, but the challenge he identifies is the right one.

Congratulations to the people of Hungary for showing that populist extremists can be defeated – even despite Donald Trump’s best efforts.

Whilst I very much don’t want to look at everything globally through the lens of British political culture, I also want to point out that Matthew Goodwin was getting paid a lot of money by the Victor Orban led government and highly likely he won’t be from now on and that’s y’know very funny?

A Top Boris Johnson Aide Says The UK Will Have A “Special Relationship” With Viktor Orbán’s Hungary After Brexit Tim Montgomerie praised the "interesting early thinking on the limits of liberalism" by Hungary's authoritarian government at an event hosted by a right-wing think tank.

Spare a thought for Tim Montgomerie whose dreams of a special relationship with Orban are dashed. Gone is the 'interesting early thinking on the limits of liberalism'. He'll have to carry the torch himself. www.buzzfeed.com/alexwickham/...
