It's wonderful that people want more content from the games we pour our hearts and souls into, but it turns toxic when we're too scared to communicate and stand firm on our vision for the games we make.

I think devs/studios/publishers need to get better at setting player expectations, not only for our own communities but for the industry at large.

In the industry, we know that not every game should be a "forever game" and that no game is dead as long as it's playable. So why aren't we saying this out loud?

Over the last 10 years, I've noticed a shift in player expectations. Every game is expected to be updated forever with new content, and if a game takes too long between updates, it's "dead".

For me, it was a routine reply I've been communicating for years - this was just the first time it got a larger audience.

The other week, I made a reply on behalf of Landfall that went slightly viral, and it's caused a bit of (in my opinion) necessary industry discourse around what expectations we communicate to our players.
