I’m so proud to be a trustee of Devon Wildlife Trust

But this Thursday is our AGM and after 7 wonderful years I step down to make way for fresh ideas and new perspectives

The River Torridge is one of the main catchments where our Northern Devon Natural
Solutions project has focussed its work.
So it's very encouraging to hear of the success of a local initiative which is boosting salmon populations in the river. Volunteers from the Torridge Rivers Association have established a hatchery where they are now raising young fish which in coming years should help salmon recover after decades of falling numbers.
Last December five adult female salmon, known as hens, were caught during their migration up the river. Their fertilised eggs were then stored in tanks and left to develop. One of the greatest obstacles to successful salmon spawning and egg hatching is the absence of clean unpolluted river water and clean gravels free from a covering of sediment. The tanks provided the ideal conditions - largely free of pollution and with predators absent. In January the eggs began to hatch and the baby fish, known as alevin, were fed and allowed to grow.
Then in spring came the moment of release. Volunteers were able to put out a grand total of 33.000 young salmon into areas of the river where the conditions are known to be most favourable.
In a few years - all going well - some of these fish will make their journey to the sea where they will mature, before returning as adults to their 'home' river, the Torridge.
There they will breed and begin the lifecycle once more.

And every year I fall in love with autumn all over again

Post-publication, could we get a list of discarded powers? 🄲

The answer was not the point. The answer was never the point. The process of searching is the process of learning.

Hi Rose, thanks for the reply! Glad to hear it.

I often hear vaguely encouraging things from Labour (e.g. 'firmer action on pesticides') but not a lot of measurable goals or commitments (e.g. 'my ward will be pesticide free by 2027').

In case that's helpful out on the campaign trail :)

There’s a very good reason why ā€œgrowthā€ seems to be eluding most mature economies including ours. The economy depends on natural capital and ours is severely depleted.

Not all activism is meant for public consumption. If you think all activism requires that everyone know what you're doing, are you doing work for others or for yourself?

A beach at sunset, taken near where the water is lapping at the sand. Tide is out, so the sand is wet and reflecting the pink clouds above. A headland is visible in the background.

Ah, West Wales. Clear skies, endless beaches, squeaky choughs and oystercatchers and buzzards

Brent geese | The Wildlife Trusts Find out where to see brent geese as they make the UK's south and east coasts their winter home; arriving in the autumn and staying through to early February when the onset of spring is in sight.

Exe Esturary one to add to this page, @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social?

Amen to this whole thread.

And if you hear anyone complaining about this delaying the next Wingspan expansion, tell them they now owe a $50 donation to their local hospice organization for being an asshole. Findpan doesn't have a thing to do with the delay but my dad's cancer sure as hell does.

Working in comms & social media can make it extra challenging to have a long stretch offline, but in the tenth year of my business I’ve got the process down.

So this is me signing off for the year.

Catch you ~6 Jan, 2025!

ā€œIt's amazing how pollution has dropped in #Paris in 15 years. @annehidalgo.bsky.social has filled the city with bike-lanes & not only has she reduced pollution by 40% but she’s also been re-elected.ā€

Trading car space for green space, bike space, kid space…trading pollution for people. Good trade.
