Never been to Jersey either but it sounds quite a bit more laid back than NYC. Beach culture and whathaveyou.
We have beaches too, but they're rocky, not sandy. And the water's cold and rough. It's very different from your typical touristy beaches.

I've never been to NYC, but I see pros and cons to it. On one hand, it feels like you'd never be bored, there's always something going on or something to do. But on the other hand it just feels overwhelming, like a sensory overload. Noisy not just to the ears but to the soul.
Nanaimo's about 100,000 people, Victoria's almost 400,000 (including the neighbouring municipalities). They're the two biggest cities on the island, but much, much smaller than what you think of when you typically hear "city".
Both are very walkable/bikable as well, if you're into that.
I learned French in school but never had to use it outside of that, so... it's mostly all gone now. But it's only big in the eastern half of the country. You're more likely to run into Cantonese or Hindi over here than you are French.
It's where I'm from so I can definitely vouch for its beauty and the friendliness of the people.
Lots of outdoorsy activities if you're into that. Life here moves at a slower pace compared to the big cities.
Very little French is spoken on the west coast, you'll be fine.
I have nearly 1500 followers over there...my timeline moves very fast and it's easy to fall weeks behind, so I've probably seen a lot less than you think!
Yeah, immigration is tough in general, and Canada's especially hard to get into - much harder now than it was a few years ago, and our new PM's going to toughen it more (since we need to build more housing before we can bring in more immigrants).
Still, Vancouver Island is a great place to visit!
It's not so much "who they allow into instances", rather, it's new folks get scared off because they constantly get harped on about "Use Alt Text", "Bridges are bad", "Search is bad", etc.
I had to google TPD since I'm not from the USA, hope your application works out.
It's a reference to "Homeowners Association", which is a thing in the USA where you have a small group of people who try to dictate what you can and can't do with your property (when you buy your home, you have to join the HOA and pay dues in some parts of the country).
Fedi has folks like that.
Yeah, it got increased again, 5000 characters per post now! I don't have to write threads there any more π
Agree that it's not the best for mental health especially if you have to deal with the HOA. But these days I mostly just stick to my retrocomputing bubble.
I just posted a #MARCHintosh retrospective: oldbytes.space/@smallsco/11...
(sorry Bluesky, I know I don't pay attention to you anywhere near as much as Mastodon - but the character limit here is a killer)
You're welcome! Enjoy π
(and you can always zip it up, copy it to a modern machine, and then run it using Infinite Mac or an emulator first, if you're worried about a strange binary from an untrusted source!)
running binaries people online send you may be a security risk, but it also can get you cool greetings like this, so its impossible to say if its bad or not

You're welcome! This is the "FlyingLine" demo from the "Macintosh C Programming Primer" book, modified to print my greeting. It runs on System 1 all the way up through Mac OS 9.2.2!
Ladies and gentlemen... We got 'em.
For the first time in over 30 years, the "unused" OPL3 on the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 NuBus has played a note.
More useful software to come but I have to learn how to write GUI apps first, so it might be a while :)

My Mac LC. Recapped the logic & analog boards late last year. Video is RGB to VGA. This shows it booting from an original HD. This was previously owned by a teacher from the looks of the software installed. The HD is failing though. Usually use a BlueSCSI. #marchintosh
My #GlobalTalk server for this year's #MARCHintosh is a QEMU box tucked away in a rack. Connecting with VNC has caused me some grief because the mouse refuses to stay synced on the remote machine.
This driver for QEMU appears to resolve the issue:

Over #globaltalk my LC printed to his Panasonic KX-P2123 via a Compaq Armada 1700. It's a #marchintosh miracle!
HARK! A new tab appears! Just added a new tab on the sheet to included games known to have AppleTalk/LocalTalk compatible multiplayer options.
Not all are tested... but please give 'em a try and report back!

Iβve seen people on #GlobalTalk say they avoid printing on ImageWriters during odd hours because they donβt want to bother people with the noise - but thatβs not a problem for me. the polpo zoneβs ImageWriter is in the basement and nobody can hear it so let βer rip! #MARCHintosh

I have a modern colour printer shared via Netatalk on the "beagle" zone, set it up as a Laserwriter and send me something to print π
Day 4 of Marchintosh was about paying it forward. One of our local group members was without a vintage Mac to experience #Globaltalk. We couldn't have that so I am prepping a spare PowerMac 7200 I had, like all good 7200 she is a little crispy. I tossed in a BlueSCSI V1 and she is mint! #marchintosh
