Our team took advantage of the milder temperatures last night, with trapping sessions at Jubilee Pasture in Bugthorpe and Hagg Wood in Dunnington.
These under-recorded sites yielded a promising variety including these two Beauties #mothsmatter
Extreme weather events like this are often followed by weird and wonderful records. Have you ever found anything out of the ordinary? We'd love to hear about it!
Storm Dave produced an unusual record over Easter! This Black-throated Diver was spotted on a small pond in Flamborough. It had misjudged the size of the waterbody, unable to take off it was stranded without a food source. The diver was relocated to refuel and continue its journey.

Fantastic! Thank you for the photos, really wonderful to see that little beauty. Hopefully there will be more (and when you've got your camera)!
More information and where to record your sightings can be found here dipterists.org.uk/bee-fly-watch
Fingers crossed it's very soon! 🤞Hopefully they'll pose for a close-up, too...
A beautiful close-up of a Dark-edged Bee-fly, what a stunner! The lack of sightings of bee-flies this year was noted at the @ynuorg.bsky.social conference at the weekend. We hope to see more of these fluffy signs of spring during #BeeFlyWatch this season! @uk-soldierflies.bsky.social
We had a fantastic day at the YNU conference this year! Thank you to the YNU and all the speakers for some fascinating insights and helping to spark some great conversations, both on the day and in future.
Simon especially thanks attendees for their lively engagement with his presentation "Success or not; you DECIDE", despite it being in the graveyard shift! 🦋
Our Director, Simon, would like to thank the @ynuorg.bsky.social YNU Lepidoptera Group for the hospitality at their Annual Meeting at Bramham on Sunday. The 2025 reports were fascinating and suggested some interesting patterns in the distribution of both butterflies and moths.

The image shows a Reed Bunting, one of the surveyed birds. It is standing on a branch and has a black head, white neck and cheek, light rust and back wings, and a pale cream breast with strips of darker brown colour. It is looking towards the left of the image.
We were visited by one of our local recorders in the office this week in preparation for some exciting work analysing farmland bird transect survey data from the Wolds. Together our job will be to see what we can infer of their abundance, distribution, and habitat preference over a 13-year period 🪶
Quite the opposite - they seem very popular! 🐍
Wow!! Any tips for making an attractive garden for slow-worms?
