Usually, I think the NHL's relationship to replay is logical and clear and much better than most sports (perhaps because of the nature of the sport; perhaps because of Luddite tendencies), but that sequence was a basically incomprehensible.

Doing well, L Mari! Hope you are too. Not about WIU exactly, but certainly about all the weirdness in higher education!
Flash fiction by @lmariharris.bsky.social is like a precious gem, rare & worth the wait. So good to read her again!

Just a reminder that there's no reason for anyone under 8 (10?) to be playing sex-segregated sports.
Taking this article as the impetus to promote my new flash collection (it's a deconstructed campus novel!) about a failing liberal arts school in Illinois. Bomberville is out in August! Just in time for back to school! From Broken Tribe Press! Mark your calendars...

We finally reached the end of Part 2 of Against the Day! Our wrap up episode with @brettbbl.bsky.social is out now!
Next episodes are “Low-lands” from Slow Learner and another round of bonus episodes, then on to Part 3!
Had about four possessions with a chance to cut it 4, including the one in the final minute where they could've gotten to within 1. Just not to be. Exactly the game UCONN wanted to play, just a couple of threes and a little bit of a tough whistle short. Deserved for Michigan, certainly.
Don't like quarters. Advance the ball rule is the dumbest one in all of sports.
Also an all-time great Milwaukee reliever and an avid film buff. As Ueck liked to say, "The Ax Man Cometh."
"The rarity of transgender athletes in elite competition suggests their exclusion is a solution in search of a problem."

I know. And I've often wondered how well conference affiliation predicts success across all men's sports, across all women's sports, across revenue vs. non-revenue sports, etc. Seeing how well it holds in sports with a more compressed budget spread would be interesting.
Big disparities within conferences too. I would guess conference affiliation is much more determinative of team budget on the men's side than the women's, but would be cool to see a full breakdown.
Always a joy to join @mappingthezone.bsky.social ! Fun place for Pynchon and general literary chat with the coolest hosts on the planet!
The slight broadcast delay lets them do it, but I was really looking forward to watching without. At least when tennis had Hawkeye, there was drama in not knowing the outcome.
More drama comes from thinking ALONG WITH participants than from knowing the correct choice and seeing if they get it right.
Begging baseball broadcasters to remove the electronic strike zone box from the screen. If ABS challenges are going to be interesting, the viewer has to have the same access to information as the players and the ump. Otherwise, we're just pointlessly waiting for confirmation of what we already know.
Thinking about the end of UCONN-Duke, and, even as a "foul up three" partisan, I don't like the foul there. First, 10 seconds is too much time. Second, UCONN only has 7 team fouls. I'd rather guard the 3pt-line than have to hit a pressure front end.
Doesn't the NET cap margins, too? I know that it incentivizes efficiency (and therefore encourages teams to take every possession seriously), but it seems quite weird to actually worry it makes teams want to win by bigger margins when you don't get credit for the actual margin.
"World Athletics’ mandatory genetic test for women athletes is misguided. I should know – I discovered the relevant gene in 1990".

The only controversy at QC No Kings was whether to wear Iowa or Illinois gear. Everyone agreed fascism sucks.
They’re here!!!!!💙🌊
Huge thank you to my amazing agent @clgslr.bsky.social and publisher Central Avenue!
Makes sense, but I'm a little surprised it's not Black? Sanchez has 16 career innings at 1st. William has one game there, I think? Maybe they don't think Vaughn will be out that long? 1 1B and 3 C is a little odd, but well within the range of Brewers roster construction, I guess.

100! AND this doesn't even work as policy. Why use chromosomes for everything? What about intersex athletes? What about sports where HRT can eliminate advantages?Making archery and boxing follow the same rules? This is the IOC not caring (or even knowing) about sport. It's mostly just cowardice.
There are many reasons this is awful. Two policy ones are: 1) Hormone-based policies were perfectly sufficient to address any fairness concerns and 2) there is no reason archery, tennis, hockey, and boxing should all be subject to the same eligibility guidelines.
