I was on a Navy ship with 400 sailors. Something in our food (not the flu) wiped out half the crew (sick in bed), and gave the rest of us flu-like symptoms, but we could still function.

When I was in Navy boot camp, we got shots for just about everything you can think of, simply to be sure we could always be mission-ready during our years of service.
Not getting the flu shot can incapacitate hundreds (or thousands) of service members.
