I hate the "secret price" too, as much as at hospitals and car dealers. Any kind of hidden knowledge you need selects for privilege, in this case having someone around to tell you that it's cheaper than sticker value, and the ability to pay $50-100 admission fee to find out your real price.

Participating in professional organizations together is not usually a COI for peer review though? I only rule out peer reviewers if they collaborated with the author on research in the past few years, have had a mentor/mentee relationship, work at the same institution, or self-report a COI.

Why is Spotted Wing Drosophila attracted to fruit at its prime, instead of overripe fruit like other flies? Xue and Dweck found the neuron receptor shifts responsible for this $500M agricultural problem, in this impressive 2-author work out of the CT Ag Experiment Station!

First person to be saved (they Yale AD's wife, here in New Haven) lived until 1999. Its crazy how recent it is- we had electric razors, helicopters, car radios, and electron microscopes before we had antibiotics.

Guns, not roses – here’s the true story of penicillin’s first patient Albert Alexander was the first known person treated with penicillin. While his ultimately fatal case is well known in medical histories, the cause of his illness has been misattributed for decades.

I have taught the rose thorn story in lectures, but some historians now say that his police station was hit by a german bombing raid: theconversation.com/guns-not-ros...
