Coming soon! My new book focused on observing and journaling about good fire (prescribed burns). New content that’s not in my Pyrosketchology book and much smaller so easier to carry into the field.

It has been fun visualizing my travel journal. I like to include a monthly map with our travel locations, route elevation profile, monthly temperature/ phenology observations, bird/migration observations, my now my travel days.

Wrapping up some of my April travel, phenology, and bird migration journal pages. I love to have overview maps, tables, and graphs to help my think about the big picture and interconnectedness.

Thanks! That is my first attempt and they are tiny sketches, so a bit challenging for me.

This didn’t come out the way I’d planned, but did capture some of the birds I’ve seen on the ocotillo blossoms over the past couple of weeks. #traveljournal #naturejournal #desertblooms #sonorandesert

I have been exploring ways to create maps for my travel journal and love the look of fantasy/game play maps. I am still struggling with sketching the scale of terrain elements, but adding the site banners and shields shows terrain, vegetaion, etc. #traveljournal #naturejournal

I was trying not to jump up and down with excitement when I saw these three Harris’s hawks outside the campground or Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

I wrapped up my #traveljournal pages from our visit to Quitobaquito Springs, Arizona from a few days ago. What a magical place at sunset and so easy to see a few rare and endangered species. #naturejournal

Old town Bisbee, AZ has historic buildings, numerous murals, art galleries, museums, and restaurants. I rarely sketch buildings and urban settings but wanted to capture some of the scenes in my travel journal.

I look at fire season as something linked closely to surface fuel curing (grass phenology) and conditions when fire can spread under fairly normal wx conditions and fire weather events as something that can occur over any time of the year creating extreme fire conditions.

I love using our BirdWeather PUCs. I include data in my journal and especially love getting the nighttime detections that I would not normally hear.

Happy New Year! One of my resolutions is to journal more of my human interactions, so I had to sketch my New Year’s Eve by the campfire with friends.

Today, at first glance, I could only see creosote, but looking closely, I noticed a variety of flowers and wildlife in the Mojave desert just outside of Death Valley National Park.

We had a nice day in Death Valley. Perfect weather and cool to see Badwater Basin with water and reflections of the mountains. We heard that the last time was about 18 years ago.

I have been working on how to enhance my observation skills and SA around temp, relative humidity, weather systems, like cold fronts, as well as weather and phenology relationships. I use a color code for avg temps and a generalized blue color range and Cyanometer for RH.

What a great place to hike and nature journal. It was too windy to hear many birds, but still magical hiking into tall maritime chaparral that created tunnels.
