Referenda zijn geen instrument van tirannen. In democratische systemen geven ze burgers direct invloed op belangrijke beslissingen. Het hangt af van hoe ze worden gebruikt, en in autoritaire regimes kunnen ze misbruikt worden, maar dat maakt ze niet inherent slecht...

..en gelukkig is dat niet meer zo! Blijft dat het een kostbaar instrument is.

..en dat dat kan, maar dat hoeft niet natuurlijk. Een referendum biedt directe inspraak, maar roept vragen op over kosten, efficiëntie en spanning met het parlementaire stelsel. Het is essentieel helder af te bakenen waarop het van toepassing is.

Gelukkig zijn jullie nu hier en daar ben ik heel blij mee, en met mij vast heel veel anderen.

Hier in Zwitserland werkt het goed en geeft het burgers meer invloed, maar het is een kostbaar systeem. Misschien moeten we nadenken over hoe dit in Nederland kan zonder dat het onze parlementaire traditie ondermijnt.

Respect voor politieke keuzes, zoals NSC'ers die opstappen. Democratie vraagt debat én samenwerking. Laten we focussen op oplossingen zonder elkaar weg te zetten. Polariserend taalgebruik helpt niemand vooruit. Nederland verdient constructieve politiek.
