Lots of #GeneralStrike100 stuff around at the moment as we approach its centenary. Fifty years ago, Leeds Other Paper looked back at events of 50 years earlier with a series on how the 1926 General Strike unfolded in and around Leeds.
View of an exhibition case with archival documents in. It's about to be closed with what looks suspiciously like a cat-burgling tool.
New exhibition incoming...

I'm also going to be giving an online talk on the 'big strike novel' - comparing Elizabeth Gaskell's 'North & South' with Ellen Wilkinson's 'Clash' for Elizabeth Gaskell House as part of the #GeneralStrike100 commemorations. Details below:

Richard Roach, writing in 1725 about the great female authors and spiritual leaders of his era. He assumed that when the history books were written they would all be put on the public stage “with applause and admiration”. 300 yrs later and we’re only just learning their names #earlymodern

A massive campaign win for our members and the credit union movement.
Millions more people will have access to fairer borrowing and saving because of today's reforms.
Growing credit unions, growing our movement, growing our economy.
It's a few weeks away yet, but on Weds 20th May I will be giving a talk for the good people of Elizabeth Gaskell House on the strike novels of Ellen Wilkinson and Elizabeth Gaskell. Details below:
Credit unions help people access fair, ethical finance. But an outdated law is holding them back.
I’ve signed this petition to update the rules so credit unions can grow and serve more communities.

Katrina that’s really kind of you - but you’re not obliged to do my research! I came across the reference to ‘shuttle-gathering’ in a history of Accrington Co-op where it’s presented as an alternative to plug-drawing so I wondered if it had been used in 1842 & whether it was an Accrington specialty!
Many thanks Katrina, I’ll check out the Hammonds’ volumes.
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.
Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Question for C19th Labour Historians have you come across references to “shuttle-gathering” as a tactic in industrial disputes? Hoping @katrinanavickas.bsky.social and @sslh.bsky.social might be able to help!
