Opinion | Mamdani is showing Democrats the way beyond wokeness The NYC mayor offers a new blueprint against cultural division.

"It’s somewhat remarkable to me that Zohran Mamdani is now the mayor of one of the world’s greatest cities," @shadihamid.bsky.social writes. "It’s a reminder that democracy works, that dark horses and so-called radicals can win elections." https://wapo.st/4qnI2aQ

If you're in DC this Tuesday, come by!

I'll be discussing whether American power is still worth believing in despite everything Trump has done to taint the idea. There is a case to be made, and I'll try my best to make it.

Mamdani is showing Democrats the way beyond wokeness. By neutralizing culturally divisive issues while staying principled on Gaza and affordability, he offers an unlikely model for winning elections. My new essay for @washingtonpost.com

In Defense of American Hypocrisy "To be seen as hypocritical is the cost of trying to be better than you actually are," writes Shadi Hamid.

Hypocrisy is, in its own perverse way, an acknowledgment of our ideals. To be a hypocrite you must first affirm that certain principles matter—even if you fail to live up to them. My new TIME essay, adapted from my book "The Case For American Power": time.com/7330080/defe...

Opinion | The neocons were wrong about war but right about Muslims George W. Bush’s 9/11 message about Islam contrasts starkly with today’s conservatives.

"Republican leaders, including Trump, have shown no interest in criticizing this upsurge of anti-Muslim vitriol within their rank," @shadihamid.bsky.social writes.

"Instead, in saying and doing nothing, they have normalized it."

Review: Shadi Hamid's The Case for American Power or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Hegemon

I reviewed the new book by @shadihamid.bsky.social which makes the case for American power. My takeaway is that he's reverse engineering neoconservatism albeit from very different premises. Give it a read (both the book and the review):

"Khanna’s critique points to a generational divide between Democrats who still believe in the fantasy of bipartisan governance and those who recognize that we’re living through an authoritarian moment," @shadihamid.bsky.social writes. https://wapo.st/47YXimv

My interview in @washingtonpost.com with potential 2028 presidential candidate Ro Khanna is out. Khanna lays out his vision for a new left populism and offers up a blistering critique of Schumer and the Democratic leadership.

What I appreciated about Zohran's victory speech was that he was unapologetic about the need to hold power. Power wasn't some unfortunate fact of life. Rather, it was the only pathway to a more just politics. If you are moral, you should seek power not cast it away.

Opinion | Two versions of Christianity battle for America’s soul Charlie Kirk’s memorial shows how politics is reshaping this religious faith.

"... pockets of American Christianity are openly rejecting Jesus’ ethics as politically naive. This should unsettle anyone who has criticized Islam for its political entanglements. American Christianity now faces its own version of the political theology crisis"

This opinion by @shadihamid.bsky.social puts a very fine point on something that I struggle with daily as a devout Christian. How can someone who has accepted Jesus as their Savior find these words acceptable? "I hate my opponent, and I don’t want the best for them.” May the Lord forgive us all.
