A year before the March explosion at a Port Arthur oil refinery, the Trump admin removed public access to the facility's risk management plans. A new proposed rule would further limit info on chemical hazards.

It is crazymaking to listen to the right claim Orban's loss means he was never an authoritarian when people in Hungary feared that opposing him would immiserate their families

A helpful thread on how to interpret Orbán's concession in the context of "competitive authoritarianism":
Opposition leader Péter Magyar at a rally.
Orbán's electoral crushing is a far greater achievement than most people outside Hungary realise.
He systemically consolidated power for 16 years, fixed the electoral map, abused govt power for political purposes & censored media.
The hurdles that Hungarians overcame for this moment were immense.
So happy for Hungary 🇭🇺

Trump's EPA claims “the strongest enforcement and compliance results in years.” But three independent groups’ analyses show a record plunge in the agency’s enforcement of the US laws protecting human health & the environment. Thanks to @envirodgi.bsky.social for tracking what's happening at EPA.
Shannan Lenke and I have an op-ed out about the historic declinein enforcement at the EPA under Trump - check it out!
“We are currently in the Great Depression of EPA enforcement.” EDGI shows “58% of enforcement activities in historic decline under this EPA, broadly contradicting Administrator Zeldin’s claim that the agency is bringing the ‘rule of law back.’” Op-ed by EDGI members: blog.ucs.org/science-blog...

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.
EPA deleted information on the hazards of the extremely toxic gas Ethylene Oxide (EtO) on the same day it announced a proposal to weaken EtO regulations. Read more in our website monitoring team's new blog: envirodatagov.org/epa-removes-...
I just resigned from NASA. It breaks my heart to leave, but I’ve become convinced the best path forward is to do the best science I can, and that can’t be here anymore. I’m still in love with the promise of those four magic letters. Ad astra per aspera, and remember: Earth is the only good planet.
Last week, EPA finally released its 2025 fiscal year enforcement report, with a press release announcing the “strongest ... results in years.” EDGI added context and data to the press office’s misleading statements. Read our annotation: envirodatagov.org/epas-enforce...
EPA’s press office claims enforcement under Trump protects “human health & the environment like never before. But the EPA’s own data shows a dramatically different trajectory.”
In fact, EDGI’s report shows that by many important measures, enforcement in 2025 hit a 20 year low. bit.ly/4sjU4TH

“It is hard to say there’s nothing we can do about [climate change] when the data show otherwise. It is hard to convince people of a lie when there is data that shows the truth. And the Trump administration knows this.”
Op-ed by EDGI’s @gretchengehrke.bsky.social: thehill.com/opinion/ener...
“The EDGI report reached a similar conclusion: ‘For some of its most important enforcement responsibilities, the track record of the Trump 2.0 EPA in 2025 is the worst of any administration in the last 20 years.’” www.sej.org/publications...
EDGI found 14 of 24 categories of EPA enforcement activities “were at their weakest or second weakest in 2025” when compared to the last 20 years, and “that the EPA started fewer civil judicial cases in 2025” than any other year since 2005. news.bloomberglaw.com/environment-...
Pollution laws like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act only work if they’re being enforced. In 2025, EPA investigations of and cases against polluters reached historic lows. A new EDGI report analyzes the agency’s record so far under this Trump administration. envirodatagov.org/publication/...

EDGI’s @gretchengehrke.bsky.social will discuss the landscape of federal data — and what groups like EDGI, @publicenvirodata.bsky.social, and others are doing to monitor and preserve it — one year into this Trump administration.
Funding cuts and staffing constraints are impacting @noaa.gov’s Regional Climate Center (RCC) tools and datasets.
EDGI is collecting anonymous feedback from RCC administrators and maintainers to learn how these tools are used and where they're weak and at risk.
