My university just made me watch an AI slop training video. Completely unnecessary. It used to be just voice over text slides. Now there's these uncanny valley poorly synched people "saying" the words. It is distracting and I'm sure less effective than the previous version. Video is about ethics 😒
PANEL 1: A demented robot holds laser gun at a guy (me): TURN OVER ALL YOUR CREATIVE OUTPUT FROM THE LAST 15 YEARS OR I VAPORIZE YOU!! DJO: Whoa! Ok! PANEL 2: The robot to a doufy guy: FOR $7.99 A MONTH YOU CAN USE THIS NYT BESTSELLING AUTHOR’S WORK TO CREATE YOUR OWN WATERED DOWN VERSIONS! Doufy Guy: got yourself a deal, buddy! PANEL 3: DJO: That robot guy just stole my shit and you’re paying him for it! GenAI is plunder, pass it on (a comic)
I haven't had a long enough breath to talk about how AI is ruining the open web. API after API I used to use is closing - literally because paying the $$$ required to feed these impersonation machines is prohibitive.
If you feel like the fight against AI is a losing battle — DON’T!
We have defeated $82 BILLION worth of data center projects all across the country. We are winning.
From sea to shining sea, Craig!
Lo leí por primera vez la semana pasada y 🥹🥰🥹
Every AI commercial is like "Hey AI, what goes good on a sandwich?" and then the AI is like "Have you considered... cheese?" And then the narrator is like: THE FUTURE IS HERE.
oh wow... so honoured somebody did this!! blog.informaticalibremx.net/carta-abiert...
Translation of our letter into Spanish!
> Carta abierta: Frenemos la incorporación acrítica de las tecnologías de IA en la Academia
Anyone knows if there's already a translation into Italian of this?
I would be robbing myself and my colleagues from the joy of connecting, feeding off each others ideas, building our relationships, learning from each other, creating together.
It's like cooking a great meal and feeding it to an incinerator. Baffling. Disheartening. WHY??
My university keeps coming up with competitions for Best Use of AI in research/teaching/scholarship pipeline. Why?
Even if I thought having a conversation with a chatbot to bounce off ideas could be helpful (🙄), why would I do that when I'm surrounded by smart humans who know me and my work.
I don't find it infuriating when students do it, just sad. Like when young men fall for pick-up artist or MRA content. They are losing so much and don't even know it because they haven't had a chance to even taste it yet.
When colleagues do it, yes, baffling and disheartening 🥺
A new model contract clause from the @authorsguild.org addresses the use of generative AI in publishing workflows (such as uploading mss into AI systems to generate summaries, marketing copy, etc.) authorsguild.org/news/use-of-...
(I'm trying to get through Bostrom's Deep Utopia right now and the question of how to find meaning in life if technology can do everything better than a human is just so... vacuous...? 🤷♀️ )
Right?!? And I can't believe there are people who really think we could/should cede that to AI.
Being on either side of writing is endlessly awesome! 🤩

I’d had enough. I had to do something about it.
The stickers must flow.
on a related note, @globalvoices.org is doing a series called "don't ask AI, ask a peer" that looks very cool

"No more shoes?"
"Nope. AI all day."
"What does that mean?"
"It's AI. It's in everything. It's the future. So we're the future."
"What does your AI do?"
"Multi-modal agentic self-supervised latent-space singularity."
"You don't know what that means, do you?"
"No."
"Here's a billion dollars."
It is also currently under £3 in the UK!

Mexico has had Seguro Popular (~universal healthcare) for a couple decades. I don't really know enough to say whether the new reforms are going to result in a stronger model, but it's true that universal healthcare in Mexico is not new as of this admin.

Apparently a lot of museums are struggling in the post-COVID era; people got out of the habit of visiting. So they'd probably really appreciate your visit.
Creative. 🌹
Now it makes sense that they find LLMs so impressive. "Super-human intelligence!" 😒
