Okay so it's not just me being precious then. I'm glad I'm not alone.

It feels weird and I don't feel like I'm doing a great job expressing my discomfort.

It feels like we won a battle and now everybody is trying on the hats with little skulls on them.

Man, it's VERY cathartic to see people dunking on Infowars and watching it burn, but I don't think it's a great idea to start wearing it loud and proud when up until literally yesterday it has been a haven for our most vile members of society.

This has been something about my journey back into Star Trek that has really hit me.

They do it through magical scifi and cardboard alien cultures, but they weren't afraid to try to dig into ideas like this. I'm impressed with it, even if it's pretty dated by a lot of standards now. They tried!

Yeah, definitely the best resolution, especially for Laforge.

He really does strike me as the kind of guy who can't recognize when someone is doing him a kindness.

I've been wondering if there couldn't be a way to do that visor that would offer better visibility. I kind of wonder if they could use a polarized lens behind smaller bars on a modern version.

Like, we could do it with SFX at this point, but it's so much better as practical fx.

Like, they had two really good episodes about him generating an AI engineer for work reasons, and then the computer does what it always does and yesman's him into loving it, causing serious friction when he meets the real person.

That episode had to wrap for time and it shows :( Lots to unpack.

I'm excited to get to it. I should wrap season 4 tomorrow sometime. I've never done Trek in a sequence before, and it's been really fun.

I think that to this point watching La Forge really enter the spotlight has been my favorite journey. Sadly, he also suffers from stupid relationships syndrome.

I'm hoping they find their feet with them in the next couple of seasons.

It feels really bad to be a dude watching this show going "What are these ladies doing? Get it together fictional women in the television!!"

I really want to like at least one of them!

I think she's a casualty of women being written by men, cuz Deanna Troi also has these wild swings into meangirl territory for no good reason, and then there's her mother who is also... not great.

The heaving bulk of their issues are boy troubles, and that's aged really poorly.

I want to like her! I want this bit of progressive history to have some strong women in it but like, *come on*. COME ON. She has to be good at something! The comedic awkward fuckup guy, Barclay, gets to be actually good at stuff sometimes even!

He's only been in two episodes!!!

I don't really want to go into her competence as a doctor besides this cuz it's just daytime TV writing with access to magic, but her staff doesn't know what a splint is, and in the first season a guy nearly bleeds to death from a holodeck gunshot wound cuz nobody gets a cut in the future.

This poor fictional woman just does not get to have an identity and it sucks!

Bev has to be the forefront expert in practicing experimental defensive Xenomedicine at this point. Let her fucking act like it. Instead she constantly has shallow relationships with conventionally attractive men and badgers her ENLISTED OFFICER PRODIGY SON.

One crew member is trying to become human! Several of the crewmen have become *inhuman*. She sees this all the time and never seems to go "Well, yeah, weird stuff happens in the unknown." It's always "There's no class about this in medical school." And like Yes?! Hello!? YOU are the course!!

I think they were trying to make her a kind of every-woman? Single mother with degree on a starship with romantic entanglements to her boss.

But like, she's never allowed to be anything more than that. Everyone else on board is expanding their horizons every episode. Often with her help!!

I just wanna see her go *somewhere* so badly.

Lwaxana Troi of all characters has seen more meaningful growth than Beverly. She fell in love with a man who has an age-death ritual and goes to see him off or start a rebellion.

Meanwhile Beverly Crusher exists as this terrible constant.

But we are four seasons in and every time they try to give her the spotlight we find some kind of gross bigotry or other small minded thinking.

Whenever doctoring goes outside sickbay she's also just not competent. Again, this is a character for daytime TV in the 90s but come on.

We also just... Never address Riker'e trauma in this.

The episode just closes on "Sure, I can do my mind controlled coworker. but a gay/trans relationship? Whoooof no can do, parasitic lifeform."

Like, I know usually Crusher is flat cuz she's a woman being written by men for 90s television.

But a new body is coming. We can reconcile this horrorshow for Riker when that happens.

The new body? Female!

SUDDENLY Crusher has to break it off. NOW? You were willing to put in the work while your partner piloted the husk of your friend and coworker around, but a WOMAN?!

And like, that's horrifying. An alien symbiote misusing your friend and coworker's body romantically *for 40 hours, tops* is gross. Fully indulging that misuse is an HR NIGHTMARE at BEST. Just chill out for a couple days, Crusher! Put it back in your pants!
