Unprofessional peer reviews disproportionately harm underrepresented groups in STEM Background Peer reviewed research is paramount to the advancement of science. Ideally, the peer review process is an unbiased, fair assessment of the scientific merit and credibility of a study; howev...

Zimmer also cited a survey by @nsilbiger.bsky.social & Stubler showing that unprofessional reviewer comments can be especially demoralizing for women, non‑binary scientists, & people of color, harming confidence, productivity, & career progress.

This was such a cool project to be a part of! We used ML models to build a high-res (1.4m) land cover map, and combined terrain+weather data w/ algae+water samples from >200 lagoon sites over 4 years to understand connections between land use, precipitation, water quality, and microbial communities.

Okinawa had its hottest September at 1.6C above the average. I filmed this mass coral bleaching last year, but didn't have the heart to share. Total annihilation of the first few meters of depth. This stuff happens before our eyes, and yet people who think it isn't real keep gaining power.
