Researchers discovered most people with DLD have not had their needs identified.
This needs to change.
We need you to be part of the change.
#DLDday, Friday October 17th. The theme is 'you can't see DLD' so let's make it visible.

Cover of the book Evidence-based support for children and young people with additional needs: The Roadmap by Caroline Bowen and Pamela Snow with Philippa Brandon, foreword by Heidi Gregory. The background is a soft orange colour. The title text is bold and black, with 'The Roadmap' in blue. Below the title, there is an illustration of a busy park scene with trees, children, and adults walking along winding paths. A yellow school bus, parked under trees, is visible in the top left of the illustration.

I 💜 this by @sunshinechrissa. Humour is such an important coping strategy and the young adults at NAPLIC confirmed this. ‘Meet DLD’ uses gentle humour to introduce a big idea with a light touch. #dld #devlangdis #radld #tdl #earlylanguage #speechies

And this is why we’re here at #NAPLIC25… Tanaya brilliantly shared her experiences as a young adult with DLD. Sadly she is not alone in her experiences of the education system with #DevLangDis But oh wow! Not a dry eye in the house after that amazing song!! 🤩 Thank you Tanaya!! 🌟 🙏 🙏

Some of the experiences were jaw-droppingly poor. We need to do better as a profession

In schools who are implementing #oracy approaches, there is lots to offer children with #DevLangDis. Teachers are more aware of language so better identification of DLD. Also talk is explicitly taught. Structure helps those with DLD.

At #NAPLIC25 listening to expert by experience Tanaya talking about life as adult with #DevLangDis. College was difficult. Took a long time to get support. Staff don't know about DLD.
After diagnosis Tanaya is able to ask when she doesn't understand

It took permanent exclusion and PRU placement for Abraz to get a a diagnosis of #DevLangDis before needs could be met in education. Subsequently he achieved top results at college, has a degree in social work and is the most inspirational guy!! 🙏🌟 Recognising #SLCN can be life changing #NAPLIC25

Abraz Hussein, an adult with DLD tells his story. He got through primary without much support, but at start of secondary was permanently excluded. Then went to PRU before getting diagnosed and going to a special school for speech and language. Support makes all the difference!
