I think that a totally justifiable desire to defend the public health profession has driven a lot of people to deny how hard the isolation itself was for people. Giving up (or severely diminishing) your social support system isn't a minor inconvenience. and that's not even getting into job loss...

I think an under-discussed part of COVID madness was genuinely not knowing how long the isolation would last. The vaccine was developed in record time. But we didn't know that at the start! There WAS speculation about permanent lockdown. Even people excited about the possibility!
