New piece started :3 It is a fanart again 😅 @lianocturna.bsky.social as a Styxosaurus ❤️

Secretary bird inspired Dilophosaurus wetherilli, but cutout from the original painting I created in 2022
The original cut-out. First I tried to reshape skull based on the archosaur skull ontogeny study referenced in the Nanotyrannus paper, then added details more based on anatomy of birds and the Trex-lip art study I made a while back

Portrait of a secretary bird inspired dilophosaurus wetherilli juvenile
I overpainted the old secretary bird inspired Dilophosaurus juvenile as a portrait on Tuesday which was the inspiration to do the same with the other Dilo :3
I am really proud of the progress I made with paleoart 😁

I’m glad NPR included skeptical voices - because de-extinction is a dangerous fantasy - but we’ve seen this before. Colossal dangles a story/access, journalists take it and say other researchers have criticisms, and nothing changes save for an update to the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Mammoth! timeline

Human-like facial muscle exploration on Kunpengopterus based on Avatar's (the blue one) facial muscle sym system
Exploration of Blender add-on, FaceIt facial tracking mark positioning on Kunpengopterus
Lil exploration of how I might try to make facial tracking for a pterosaur (Kunpengopterus) model in the future, so far I am enjoying the project, but it is quite the challenge 😅

Kunpengopterus s. and a. attempted to be articulated on the left using the describing drawings of the fossils from the right
Finished coloring of the YAPAPA dance! 🥳 Then attempted articulating Kunpengopterus 😨 Pls tell me what I did wrong if I have D:
At the end we rained down sushi on the amazing @songofusera.bsky.social who we are gonna collab with next week! ❤️

I really like the work of the Black Hills Institute museum and happy that it inspired me to try do some amateur science and paleoarting! I hope they follow up on all the comments and responses to their video!
If you saw anything I missed or misunderstood or have any feedback, please let me know! ❤️

side view of a seriema
side view of an ostrich
And as the other side of the bracketing Peter Larson claims birds don't have lips
I wanted to search references on how beaks fit to each other to get an idea on how a lip might layer in dinosaurs with teeth, and found bird lips?
I had problems with other claims too but found these most interesting

mounted Pseudosuchian skeletons
Using crocodile as reference against Mark Witton's use of monitor lizard, claiming it is "weird" because of phylogenetic bracketing felt off as in Dr Witton's reason is stated to be the lizard being a terrestrial reptile
We also do have terrestrial crocodile ancestors that do not look like crocs

Trix skull with closed mouth in Blender from the side
Trix skull with closed mouth in Blender from the inside looking at the teeth fitting in(?)
Only using the Dentary to present how the teeth not just fit, but might even have there own little dents to slot in did not feel as accurate
My Trix scan seem to have lost some of these due to resolution, but suggestion was there
The jaw did not have enough place to close as much as video suggests

DON'T GIVE ME NO LIP! Why T-Rex Didn't have Lips
YouTube video by Black Hills Institute of Geological Research
The mentioned video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g5X...
While I understood and found the Nanotyrannus video, this one felt less coherent to me and some of the points made got lost on me and the others did not feel as strong.
Closing the mouth more and having the holes did inspire me tho

on the left: Trix, the Tyrannosaurus reconstructed closely based on Black Hill Institute video and her skull scan
Teeth out, more crocodile like scales covering the gums
Cross section of the skull under
on the right: same screenshot of the scan but with lips based on bird lips and beaks

They are just a little sketch I made trying to approach the video with an open mind ❤️

A Homotherium stands by the downed body of a Megaloceros, its huge antlers standing out against the drab colored grassland landscape framed by snowy hills in the background.

Little more progress on the Tyrannosaurus skull ❤️ These bones are progressively getting harder to abstract, but I can't wait to experiment with them!

I have big plans for this so far very unfinished skull retopo of a scan of Trix the Tyrannosaurus from sketchfab. Hopefully we can learn a lot on stream with the help of it about T-rex and Nanotyrannus and how might a young T-rex looked compared to the Nano 👀

Single panel comic in sepia tones of a Tyrannosaurus addressing a Nanotyrannus with the words 'you're adopted,' to which the Nanotyrannus replies, 'WOW.'
'You're adopted'
----------
(For the non-palaeo folks, this is in light of a newly published paper re-establishing that #Nanotyrannus, previously understood to be a juvenile #T.rex, is indeed its own genus after all.)
