"Something else is also happening—a disassociation from the reality of cause and effect, from meaning and history. These men no longer feel the need to change the world in order to succeed, because their success is guaranteed, no matter what happens to the rest of us."

"When Peter Thiel said, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible,” he wasn’t talking about your freedom. He was talking about his own. You don’t exist."

"The windfall from spikes in the price of oil also overwhelmingly go to the wealthy, producing a hidden redistribution from lower-income households to the super-rich."

Happy Tax Day, New York. We’re taxing the rich.

Here a grandmother is forced to do a gig job with no job security because she can’t afford to retire? What are we celebrating here?
Congrats to my old friend Aadam Jacobs, deservingly receiving international recognition from numerous press sites for creating probably the most important live music archive of the past 30 years, simply by being Aadam.
Docentes y estudiantes, desde desde 0 años hasta la universidad, confluirán el próximo 19 de abril en Atocha para denunciar la extrema precariedad que aqueja al sector fruto de las políticas de recortes estructurales.
I can't stop listening to this fantastic album.

El 23 de abril estaré en @mircouam.bsky.social presentando un avance de mi proyecto de investigación del último año.
Episode with @quinnslobodian.com & @bentarnoff.com which I hope will entice you to read (pre-order?) their book even if you are soooooooo tired of the daily trifles of Elon Musk.
His saturating triviality is a strategic impediment to perceiving his making & potentially enduring beyond MAGA redux.
Palantir discovered ontology in much the same way Columbus discovered America.
That is to say:the broligarchs are thieves & barbarians. They plant their flags on others' work & say "look at our genius!"
Now they're claiming to have "popularized" a well-known branch of philosophy 1,000s of yrs old.
Saving this to watch all the videos as soon as I have time!
Princeton has shared the full talk I had with @katemanne.bsky.social

Nancy Fraser: “On the colonisation of the lifeworld, I felt that, in essentialising the system/lifeworld distinction, Habermas masked historically specific forms of male domination and missed the transformative potential of feminist movements.”
This needs to be shared and reshared. It should not be difficult to develop a non-profit alternative to Canvas, which adds hardly any value to our instructional and curriculum design work, while being ideally positioned (and designed) to extract both the value we create and our students' data.
Private equity has been fantasizing about the capture of education for decades. This is the deepest they’ve ever gotten their tendrils into it.
Goldman Sachs reports that 300 million full-time jobs could be replaced by AI by 2030. Labor turnover is high and hiring has slowed. 71% of Americans worry that AI will cause permanent job loss. As young people about to enter the workforce for the first time, the fear of unemployment is understandable, but we cannot save ourselves with the very tool that is putting us at risk. The irony is that as Penn pours endless money and energy into AI advancement in its attempt to get ahead, the University is only quickening its own demise. AI cannot coexist with education — it can only degrade it. As technology advances and workers are replaced by machines, schools are some of the only places we have left to explore and wrestle with human thought. With our own university leading the charge, AI is now corrupting those few sacred spaces and leaving us with nowhere to engage in true scholarship. Editorials represent the majority view of members of The Daily Pennsylvanian Editorial Board who meet regularly to discuss issues relevant to the Penn community. This body is led by Editorial Board Chair Jack Lakis and is entirely separate from the newsroom. Questions or comments should be directed to letters@thedp.com.
An unaccounted for part of the economy is how much young people virulently hate AI, despite how aggressively it's being forced on them. They realize it's making their friends dumber and ruining the world and they want nothing to do with it.

I received the copies of the Spanish translation of my book, *The Amistad Rebellion*, published by the wonderful @traficantes-ed.bsky.social in Madrid. Happy to be able to tell my Spanish-speaking friends that the book is available for free download!

One of the automated tasks Canvas is promising is "rubric generation." What if I said that moving away from rubric-based assessment is a necessity to preserve your labor and freedom to teach as you wish? We have to look underneath the hood of the systems this technology is shaping.
Strong recommendation to teaching faculty to just say no to this stuff, even if you are AI curious/enthusiastic. This is meant to reduce faculty autonomy and capture human labor with automation. You're selling out your future self and the profession as a whole. www.insidehighered.com/news/tech-in...
Hadn’t seen this had gone up, based on an interview I did with them. Second Thought do some of the best produced medium length videos on important political topics, especially strong on archival footage use.

Of interest (echoing the OP) is the idea of reckoning with a “future accountability moment” in which a student *knows* they *need to know* whatever they can write down *without knowing*. That seems like it can motivate real attempts to learn even while *faking* learning with AI on some assessments
