Today marked the 115th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in NYC. The annual ceremony honors the 146 garment workers — mostly young immigrant women — who died in 1911. Volunteers also chalked victims’ names outside where they lived on the Lower East Side.

The line tonight (3/6/2026) for old-timer Panna II, the last restaurant standing at 93 First Ave. in the East Village … a surge in business thanks to a fictional John John and Carolyn B visit in the FX series 'John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.'
Many thanks to @gaofnyc.bsky.social for nominating EVG for a 2026 GANYC Apple Award in the "Outstanding NYC Website" category. We're honored to be included in the mix with 2 excellent sites — OldNYC and Little Kid Big City. The awards ceremony is on Monday evening.

1 of my fave annual local events starts today — the New Colossus Festival. Over the next 6 days, 190 indie bands from around the world will be playing at 12 East Village-Lower East Side venues. Discovered a lot of off-the-radar bands here through the years. Info: www.newcolossusfestival.com

Got the closed notice at 3:50 --- "Due to the continuing inclement weather, courthouses in New York City ... will be closed on Monday, February 23, 2026 - except for emergency applications. Criminal Court arraignment parts will open at 2 pm on February 23 within the five boroughs ..."
I'm supposed to start jury duty tomorrow, Feb. 23, in NYC. Can't imagine the court being open amid the blizzard warnings...
There was def a spring break/fever vibe going on...

The calm before the blizzard warning tomorrow... here's a view of 7th Street in the East Village tomorrow. 18+ inches of snow could fall on NYC and the tri-state area Sunday into Monday.

The Joe Strummer mural on 7th Street @ Ave A in the East Village today. Feb. 6 is International Clash Day. KEXP in Seattle (AM Show Host John Richards) started this tradition in 2013, where the station honors the legacy of @theclash.com with deep cuts, covers and Clash tracks.

The Village East by Angelika on 2nd Avenue & 12th Street has a slate of (mostly) Oscar nominees on view. And seats for four of them — "Blue Moon," "One Battle After Another," "Sinners" and "Bugonia" — are $5 during all screenings. (The screening times vary for these throughout the coming week.)
I loved being about a 6- to 7-minute walk from here.

This is the 9-story office building built on the property that previously housed the Sunshine Cinema
Today, alcohol sales at theaters are as common as soda and popcorn. Anyway, this was the closest theater to my apt, and I spent a lot of time here. Today, there's a 9-story office building with a private dining club on the ground floor.
The Sunshine Cinema closed on this day in Jan. 2018 after 17 years. Landmark reportedly had the opportunity to buy the property but decided against it after the local Community Board voted down an application for a liquor license in 2012 for pre- and post-movie drinks & dinner. 1/2
