But who should bear the responsibilities & costs of transforming the agrifood system? We discuss the need of multi-scale approaches beyond the local, involving both weaker and stronger links in the global food chain. Retailers, European regulations, F&V companies, and input companies all have a role
Our findings highlight the challenges of a production model that surpasses biophysical limits, is sustained on immigrant low-wage labor and further encourages a governance model lacking cooperation and fostering polarized views.
Spain is the 7th global F&V producer -the most important within the EU- and the 2nd regarding F&V exportations globally. The semi-arid Southeast 🌅 plays a vital role in supplying F&V to the EU- especially during winter ☃️ . It exports over 78% of its production from more than 80,000 hectares of crops
In our new study, with great international and interdisciplinary collaborators we explore this question in the intensive agricultural system of Southeast Spain 🇪🇦 as part of the XPaths project (xpathsfutures.org),

Who should bear the costs of transforming the agrifood system?
Enhancing F&V 🍊 🫑 production is key to sustainable food systems, but production sites’ social-ecological dynamics create trade-offs for increasing F&V production globally
