People really want to understand Israel's violence against Palestinians as a purely religious matter. But they also want to avoid being antisemites, which means they can't just blame Jews as a whole.

So, naturally, the "solution" is to invent a religious division between Good Jews and Bad Jews.

After thinking about this some more, I think there are really two things going on here that interact in weird ways. One is the background radiation of Protestantism that influences everything in this country, and the other is the misinterpretation of Jewish terminology when non-Jews see it.

I've talked about the "Torah Jews Good, Talmud Jews Bad" delusion before, but this thread adds some context to it that I hadn't really clicked together.

When it comes to associating the Talmud with Zionism, there's another, related factor: The need to see Israel through purely religious terms.
