UKHE is in such a state that Cambridge has now made it onto the list, with dozens of redundancies already apparently. Still, not to worry, only in that merely ornamental discipline of, er, epidemiology. So many lessons learned - and already forgotten - about pandemic preparedness, I guess...
Coachella is trying to wipe all of the footage of The Strokes protest set so Iβm gonna post it here. The last images on the screen made me cry.
What function did ~100k-year-old engravings from Blombos Cave & Diepkloof serve? Decoration, identity marking, proto-writing? osf.io/preprints/ps... uses transmission chains + cognitive experiments to find out & help answering one of the hardest questions in cognitive archaeology. long thread! 1/

I personally would now bet on wearable tech that somehow uses an electromagnetic field or something otherwise clever to disrupt this sort of nonsense. I want an art student to design a bracelet or otherwise lovely thing that projects an image of my choice whenever one of these things looks at me.

If youre a UK resident you have a prime opportunity to push back against the Online Safety Act and online surveillance. PLEASE take a moment to fill this out and share it around
Yeah, yeah. I know. America is important. But I'm so fucking sick of it absolutely dominating the UK news cycle. I get it. You voted in a turd and now you're swimming in fascist shit. But we have our own rightwing wanklord problems that need more national coverage. anon_opin GOLD from 9th October 2025

DNA is not the same as kinship.
Our perspective paper argues that treating genetics as the ultimate proof of identity or family can:
β’ erase community-defined relationships
β’ reinforce Western biases
β’ and even cause real harm in policy + research

In the study in the journal Antiquity, researchers analysed the DNA of 22 people from five tombs in Caithness and the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland. The tombs were used between 3800 and 3200 B.C., during transitions from foraging to farming.
