The mare continues to find longlines to be suspicious tomfoolery. Her eyes say "You've trained me for years to walk by your shoulder. Why have the rules changed?" OTOH, I did much better with my connection yesterday and we managed turns and something that approached a circle. #equestrian

Today's equestrian goal was to improve my following hands. So we did the exercise where I ride with my eyes closed, concentrating only on the feel of the reins. This had the unfortunate side effect that all day I closed my eyes when I asked for half-halts. #eqsky #equestrian

With respect, I think the question is flawed. Opportunity costs are never measured in money, but in options, because values are subjective. I think precarity units are similarly subjective. Money is merely the unit of measurement we use to understand one another's subjective values.

Of course with all tools, you need the discipline to devise and use test cases. Where you can exert a similar discipline, AI can serve as a toolsmith. But in situations like law and history (et. al.) it will be difficult to design the test cases.

This essay is brilliant, but is predicated on the assumption that the supervisor measures only outcome. Does not coach methodology. That's not my experience.

I felt a profound need to whine, but like most whinging, the _content_ of the whine is of minimal relevance. Consequently I share with you this generic whine. As a bonus, you may commiserate with this whine safe from any danger of controversy.

I agree that this paper is an invaluable contribution to the conversation. But in software we recognize the value of a toolsmith - the person on the team who doesn't produce final code, but produces tools that permit the rest of the team to work faster, better, etc./1

I am struck by the pervasiveness of colonialism in litRPG and I'd like to read a well written LitRPG that deals with the theme in a mature manner.

What a cool definition of elders. cool on multiple levels. Evocative phrase, "the repeated experience of looking"
The second paragraph fills me with a different emotion.

If AI were to solve a quadratic equation, I could check that quickly. But if I asked AI to write a court filing or a scholarly paper, I'm not sure that the time needed to validate the references would be an order of magnitude less than the time to write the paper.

Please explore this. I think this is important. Intuition tells me that there are problems that can be checked more quickly than they can be solved, and there is a separate class of problems where checking time is roughly equivalent to solving time. Does that sound plausible? Does it sound useful?

The politics exceed some analogue of the Overton window. If the politics are organic to the story and - in an Overton sort of way - plausible, I doubt that most people object. The Romulans shooting at the federation is very explicitly political. But organic and familiar politics.

Second, lots of people commenting that all science fiction is political. This is true, but not very useful. Weir objects to preaching - where the social commentary disrupts the story. I infer that the real objection is either to bad writing, or /3

First, I think those comments need to be contextualized within Paramount's rejection of Weir's pitch. Seems important to understanding the comment./1

Andy Weir Says Paramount Rejected His 'Star Trek' Pitch, Proceeds to Blast Modern 'Trek' Given the 'Project Hail Mary' writer's past comments about his 'Star Trek' hopes, it's perhaps not hard to imagine why they were turned down.

A. Weir's comments on political science fiction have attracted lots of attention this week. I've got two observations/0

Equally unrealistic, but I wish we had better message. I wish that every event included What, Where (state and Kingdom), When and a link to a webpage where I can get more information/3

We are a diverse community with diverse communications preferences (and needs) and wildly different technical proficiencies. Tools won't solve the problem *that I perceive*./2

On FB two different individuals whom I respect have suggested that the SCA needs a different tool to improve communications. I'd argue that the cost of Yet Another Non-Interoperative Tool is higher than the value. What we need is a better message. /1

My primary research at the moment is how [Fiore's](wiktenauer.com/wiki/Fiore) mounted plays actually work. Then, to understand what I was learning I had to create a [weapons flow](youtu.be/fydCQDM72Ok) to teach me to move smoothly between the positions while riding well.

Second, It is entirely possible to study what is it about the structure of society that penalizes/incentivizes female participation in the military without studying "women's history". I say that not to disparage the term "women's history", but few questions should be off the table.

(note; neither of these is IMHO "woke") First, wouldn't it be a far more interesting story if it explored that? The story is *about* what happens when an empire confronts disruptions. Overt female participation in the military would have supported that story (IMHO)

Collections: Warfare in Dune, Part II: The Fremen Jihad This is the second part (I, II) of our somewhat silly look about the plausibility of warfare in Frank Herbert’s Dune. Last week, we looked at the system of warfare that is dominant in the set…

A quote from ACOUP, "While Fremen women are trained to fight and Chani is on the front lines, we do not see any other women do so: the Fremen do not employ their womenfolk offensively as fighters, as a rule.2 " Two observations

I'm slowly convincing myself that security will work only when accountability moves from IT to mission/operations. Make the mission owner accountable for security and require them to contract with IT for secure operations.
