Happy Friday!
Very happy to announce that our new preprint is available on bioRxiv (doi.org/10.1101/2025... ). This study has been years in the making, and is the first to use metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics to understand fibre fermentation in the chicken gut.
Thrilled that our new paper on the Red Grouse microbiota has now been published in BMC Microbiology: doi.org/10.1186/s128...! A really rewarding collaboration between our team and Nick Hesford and Kathy Fletcher from the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust @gwct.org.uk.
A team visited Nepal to collect data and engage with farmers as part of a project to understand antimicrobial resistance in Yak milk microbiomes

IRR Group Leader Chengcan Yao and colleagues have found that reducing the production or effect of fat-based hormones called prostaglandins, or boosting helpful gut bacteria, could help reduce bowel inflammation, especially in older adults.

Our new preprint characterizing the red grouse microbiota for the first time using metagenomics: doi.org/10.1101/2025.... The red grouse microbiota is really interesting, as these birds rely on a very high fibre plant species (heather) for the majority of their diet. #microbiota
PLEASE SHARE: An exciting Roslin Foundation PhD opportunity in my lab, studying the chicken gut microbiota (www.findaphd.com/phds/project...). Unlike many other schemes, equally open to international and national candidates.
New preprint! I will try to keep this summary lay-friendly. Recently a viral outbreak started in Cyprus with an unusually high number of cats showing clinical signs of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), and it is estimated that over 8000 cats had died by mid-July.
