We also identified candidate polymorphic transposable elements with differences in chromatin accessibility that could contribute to the effect.
Integrating genome, transcriptome, epigenome and phenotype could be important for understanding how stress facilitates evolution under climate change.
Furthermore, the descendents of HS Spanish flies showed more rapid development than the descendants of controls. These results suggest that the more thermally tolerant Spanish flies may have evolved transgenerational hormesis (where low stress is beneficial) in response to heat shock.
Correlation between gene expression changes across generations following heat shock in flies from a finnish population (Akaa) and a Spanish population (Manzanares). For 132 genes that were differentially expressed in Spanish flies immediately after heat shock and also three generations later, there was a strong positive correlation in log fold change.
We compared transgenerational responses to heat shock (HS) in flies collected from Finland (Akaa) and Spain (Manz). Some patterns of differential expression were still detectable in Spanish flies 3 generations after HS (and postively correlated with differential expression immediately after HS).
