You don't need to. I've never been to London, especially not in Victorian times. I still run The Between.

Public Access is a game that's dear to me for several reasons, most of which is that it was the first game that I was asked to contribute to. There's still time to nab your copy and enable sick minds like myself and my co-contributors to bring even more sick things into the world.

I’m also in line to write another mystery if we hit the stretch goal, alongside a fantastic lineup of additions already unlocked during the campaign - check it out, and pack your bags for a road trip to Deep Lake.

In addition to Starlight Kingdom, I’ve written Void Angels, maybe my attempt to bring cosmic folk horror to Public Access, while taking care to avoid looking directly up at Jordan Peele’s Nope.

I’ve found that Public Access is one of the easiest gateway RPGs for fun, collaborative horror stories. It invites you to open the door to your most precious moments of nostalgia and maybe befriend your childhood nightmares. It’s a game I continue to draw inspiration from in my own designs.

Fifth Dimension Holistic Beverages & Supplies A repurposed roadside diner in the middle of nowhere, its rainbow mural depicts glowing starships, crystals, and a circle of people holding hands. Inside, a dizzying chalkboard menu lists dozens of juice bar concoctions alongside other New Age services available, including Star Chart Oracles, Psychic Vampire Defense Classes, and Desert Moon Vision Walks. Aggressively cheerful affirmation signs, crystal ornaments, and alien-themed decorations clutter every available surface. Paint the Scene: What pretentious beverage name catches your attention, and what dubious health claims are associated with it?

The Ark Towering over the park with curved arches like the exposed ribs of a giant. Unfinished domed roof glittering with stained glass fragments, rusty patches under peeling chrome. A rickety gangplank leads to an open door two stories up. Decaying fiberglass molds of animal sculptures are stacked nearby. Graffiti includes several obscene alien cartoons, along with “Land Back,” “E.T. Was Here,” “The Convergence Is Nigh,” “Juan + Leo Forever: Love You To The Moon” and “R.I.P. Grannie Z.” Paint the Scene: What unconventional detail of this structure makes you question its purpose?

Look, I’ve been to places like this for real. I just want to share that sense of… WONDER with you in your games.

Psychic Narwhal Messiah, a post-industrial, glitch-punk noise performance collective Psychedelic-patterned robes and spiked leather straps, snake-like hair extensions, retro hacker gloves and other DIY “cyberpunk” accessories. On location to shoot a music video, they are busy rigging a portable generator to stacks of TV monitors, dramatically repositioning alien mannequins from the park, and taking turns donning what appears to be a smoke-filled vaporizer helmet. Names: Ash, Orion, Y2K, Splice, Lord Prawn, The Ambassador, Sparkle Raptor. Quote: “Whoa. Hear that distortion? I’m telling you, there’s some kind of different signal out here... keep the loop going, that feedback pattern is unreal…”

It also features my favorite band, you’ve probably never heard of them. (Real fact, one of the band members is named after my partner’s project, but… you can’t hear it anywhere yet. Sorry.)

Hell yeah, that’s amazing!

A suitcase full of bibles, each one a different translation or edition, and newspaper clippings of alleged UFO sightings. Tattered folder of blueprints for Starlight Village, a gated residential compound arranged in concentric circles. A cluster of tarantulas, huddled placidly around a softly flickering TV screen. A skeleton, stooped in a contemplative posture over an array of exposed motherboards and random electronic components. A life-sized nativity scene, incomplete, depicting a trio of alien “wise men” bearing a large wrapped bundle. A small underground bunker, containing only a chair which faces a smooth wall, layered in black paint and polished to a dull gleam. A twelve-foot- tall sculpture of a saint-like alien, one hand raised in blessing, peeling green paint and empty light sockets for eyes.

Turns out there’s a lot of real-life examples already, from Holy Land to The Ark Experience. Pretty out there - but we can get always get weirder! Here’s some of the clues you might find in that old, unfinished theme park:

While brainstorming for this mystery, thinking about weird roadside attractions in the US, aliens came to mind. Friend and fellow Public Access contributor @signalstation.bsky.social suggested that, if I really wanted to get into weird Americana, I should think about the religious angle as well.

When this mystery is introduced in the game, local residents have been seeing strange lights in the abandoned park. When you investigate, you’ll meet all sorts of weirdos living on the fringes of town - and encounter a presence causing the reality-distorting manifestations of the park itself.

Starlight Kingdom is a bizarre amusement park that never opened, founded by a paranormal enthusiast who believed that alien encounters were all divine visitations. He hoped, with the creation of this dazzling amusement park, to “inspire visitors with the glory of heaven on earth.”

As the Public Access campaign hurtles toward its glorious prismatic conclusion, I’d like to highlight one of my contributions to the game I’m really proud of: a mystery called
