Field update: Sampling for CODSPA project to understand how fishing pressures affects Atlantic cod is in full swing—eDNA, cortisol (milt/eggs/brain), gametes for rearing juveniles, and acoustic telemetry + hydrophones in Eyjafjörður to track behaviour. Full blog next week! #ScienceComm #Fieldwork
Did you ever wonder what aquaculture is? Wonder no more. Let's talk about it!

This week we highlight a recent publication.
Which looked at differences between Arctic charr morphs in two lakes. They found that corresponding morphs between the two lakes had similar shape. Some morphs had similar genetics while others did not.

Last week we attended NoWPaS (International Workshop of PhDs and Post-doctoral Fellows on Anadromous Salmonids), held at Hólar in Hjaltadal, Iceland.
We were happy to learn about all the interesting salmonid research and workshop with international researchers.

Today we want to celebrate Gabrielle Ladurée, a PhD candidate at Hólar University and the University of Iceland as she got awarded a Rannís grant. Not only that, she also recently published her first study that came out of her PhD!
Check out her paper link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Screenshot of paper titled "Disentangling the effects of resource level and temperature dependence on the performance of fish in different guilds" with a first author named Bass Dye.
A paper on temperature effects on fish, written by Bass Dye. Nominative determinism strikes again!
(Interesting-looking paper too!)
Let me show you this Bowfin!
🌊Our latest research suggests releasing pollack close to their catch depths can result in their survival rates increasing from 56% for surface-released fish to more than 80%!

To live, yes! The otoliths are collected when the fish are dead
Depending on the project, there are different ways to age a fish (species-by-species basis) where measuring scale and otolith rings are great examples. That can, for example, provide information on growth rates and life history traits

Can YOU say what makes a fish a fish???? 🐟🐠🐡
#icefishresearch #fish #sciencecommunication #DidYouKnow
What is Electrofishing?
Electrofishing is a fishing method which uses electricity to catch fish. It is a common method used by scientists when doing surveys as it does not kill or harm fish. The fish can just swim away when electricity is turned off.

Ingibjörg G. Jónsdóttir at @mfri.bsky.social along with her co-authors Jón Sólmundsson, Peter J. Wright, William Butler and Pamela Woods published a paper in the ICES Journal of Marine Science.
The study explores the roles of total egg production and the survival of young fish in their first year.
New research explores how bottom trawling disturbs the seafloor, releases carbon, and what can be done to lessen its damage.
