There is one specific salmon which contains all the wisdom and knowledge the world has ever known and if you're the person to eat it you get all that knowledge.

Hayes's part; where it feels to class war to me is that the people who control how news itself is shaped seem to have no connection at all to the working class. I don't think it's intentional but I still do think it's evil in it's outcome.

I think a lawyer or software engineer or somebody like that was saying a thing like this I'd be encouraged by their curiosity. One of the faces of the only non-right wing news channel in the country being completely oblivious to one of the major themes of the blue collar world isn't hostile on

I'm sorry for not letting to on this one but it just drives me fucking crazy. If you grow up blue collar discussions about why everything you make sucks compared to how nice things used to be is like, the single most common conversation you will ever have & Hayes being oblivious feels like class war

Anyway, these are all just factors in the marginal cost of the difference. When you're comparing the cost/benefit of two completely different things, you can't compare the aggregate difference you have to compare the marginal cost increase to step up from one to the other, this is basic econ

Chart showing the occupational death rate has gone full nearly 160 per 100k workers to less than 20 in under a hundred years.

Chart showing the occupational death rate has gone full nearly 160 per 100k workers to less than 20 in under a hundred years.

The other thing is we just used to let construction workers die constantly, which is INCREDIBLY efficient. It turns out that if you are willing to accept Italians falling to their death constantly you can build brick buildings extremely fast.

Yeah also when every building needs a shitload of dudes just laying brick, you're gonna find dudes who Just Happen To Be Great at it way more frequently too. There's a million factors of doing a thing at scale that explain this, Hayes is great but it's obvious he's never spent time in construction

Like, stop thinking about buildings and think about coffee tables. Imagine a hundred years ago when IKEA didn't exist and if you wanted a coffee table you were getting a hand made object from quality lumber cuz cheap mdf did not yet exist and that's it, that's the whole thing.

This is actually a simple one. Everything about making a building used to be really fucking expensive so the marginal increase in cost of making it look a little nicer while you were building it was infinitesimal compared to the marginal cost increase of adding that shit to modern rapid construction

The amount of government red tape there SHOULD BE in this country .... It's going to infuriate people but everyone needs to accept that business and progress are not wrong benevolent gift but a dangerous tool, we should think of all technology as we do Fire

I'm reading Radium Girls now about women who died and were ignored from radium poisoning. My grandfather died at 63 from mesothelioma from asbestos exposure. Our new kitchen counters are killing thousands of men today.

New industrial materials are constantly killing working class people. Enough.

American culture at this point is pretty much 100% determined by what things different groups of people are terrified of and how they're poorly responding to it.

Delighted to find data backing up my suspicion that the loathsome sweetening via pear juice is MASSIVELY increasing in my beloved "fun little snack beverage" category. This trend will be one day regretted. marketintelo.com/report/pear-...

I'm sorry but we are going to need to reclaim the word "Stonewall" from the British. If you are going to be like this you can't use it, Americans only.

The most surprising information I've found in middle age / two decades into my career in tech is how much shit happens as just an accidental outcome of tens of thousands of white collar workers all wanting a little better pay for a little less effort

9 hours ago 3 0 1 0

So you end up with tech companies that exist cuz a ton of under-taxed investors say "well that probably won't work but in case I'm wrong I'll throw a little money at it for a taste"; people who know the product is bullshit but need a job know that and can raise money off it; engineers need rent

People always talk about "companies" and political parties and governments like the entity itself is a Rational Actor but really companies are emergent behaviors of a bunch of people who just need jobs. Very few people believe smart glasses WILL work; a lot of people just are willing to invest JIC

My cousin Shawn took weed to impress a girl when we were teenagers and his asshole & penis switched places. All the doctors at the (real) Pitt threw up when they saw it. Be my guest and Get β€œhigh” if you want this to happen to you

One of the big reasons I miss living an 8 minute can ride from LaGuardia is I can no longer participate in this debate. Big city people can debate missing flights, but now I live somewhere (Coming Columbus, OH) w/ only a flight or two per day to each destination and the idea of missing it is hell

a fun game to play is to try to imagine what on earth a "satisfactory" answer to this might be.

You could make a compelling argument that Erykah Badu has inspired more incredible songs than anyone else ever, including Jesus

I'm going to level with you, I am glad the FBI director is a drunk and given the history of the organization it's fucking insane that you people want him fired.
