This is an important and comprehensive report on the institutions that dominate the fancy fellowships. It’s worse than I thought.
And the changes in federal funding will only exacerbate these inequalities. Private foundations are in some cases the only ones funding critical scholarship.

Anyway, thank you for this analysis! It’s very helpful.
For grants, we had a (very successful) faculty member show her list of rejections and talk about those, and it really had an impact. And we have a culture where people talk about trying multiple times, which helps. But still— even as a sociologist, this pattern is SO stark and a bit surprising.
We are, by far, the least prestigious public university on the list! I knew we were on par with Duke/UNC for NHC but it’s still striking. I don’t know how I will talk to faculty about this (I don’t want to discourage too much, and I have seen the effect of networks) but this is quite a pattern.
Thank you for this. It is giving me a lot to think about. I am the Associate Dean of Research, so my job is to help people get fellowships (& grants). And NC State is one of just 2 public universities in the South in a top-5 list, I think, so I am also thinking about that (and network effects).
SBES – social, behavioral, and economic sciences – goes to ZERO in 2027. That’s STS, sociology, anthropology, as well as economics. NSF led by a business guy affiliated with Peter Thiel. just a swathe of fucking napalm across the board. No words.
We had better win this damn election.
BREAKING: In response to huge cuts in Trump's budget request, NSF is shuttering its SBE directorate. Staff will be transferred to other parts of the agency and "grants that align with Administration priorities" will be maintained.

People are making fun of the shoe thing, and for good reason, but it's also terrifying:
If Trump's cabinet and advisors are too afraid to tell him he didn't guess their shoe size correctly, they are certainly too afraid to tell him the truth about the war.
Given the endlessly recurring claim that poor people are often spending their SNAP benefits on steak and lobster (not true), it’s ironic that the federal government is spending $23 MILLION on… steak and lobster.
Another “let them eat cake” moment.
In FY2022 the federal government spent $21 billion on universal free school meals (breakfast and lunch) to K-12 students across our whole beautiful country from sea to shining sea for the whole year.
That’s like 3 weeks worth of this stuff 👇🏻
PEPFAR, the program to stop hundreds of thousands of children and adults from dying of HIV/AIDS, was $6.5 billion a year.
A war of Trump’s own making. Look at this chart and then look at those pictures of a girls’ school that we’ve destroyed.
!!!
President Trump just said, “We lifted 2.4 million Americans off of food stamps.”
A reminder of what happened to those 2.4 million Americans:
How will the killing of a cartel leader and shelter-in-place order impact your #SpringBreak2026? New York Times has some travel tips!
The Epstein files document what many women researchers have long experienced but rarely seen laid bare so starkly: exclusion operating behind closed doors, shaping who gets funded, invited, mentored, and taken seriously. How many of these networks, norms, and gatekeepers remain in place?
When you put it like this, a $75 million bribe to Melania and gutting the Washington Post seems like a small price to pay.
Jason!!! He is advanced for his age.
rep. kraft is so whimsical , using his pez collection to show what the ice presence in minnesota looks like
I’m fairly certain that in my 17 years at NC State that I’ve seen exactly two protests. This is not a campus of radicals or activists. Both protests have been in the last month, targeting ICE and its illegal, thuggish tactics.
This is the type of shit that makes it 100% clear this has nothing to do whatsoever with "law enforcement."
After executing Alex Pretti on Saturday, ICE has shifted to primarily targeting bus stops and elementary schools in my community this week. I cannot overstate how much of the ICE activity in my community is just targeting places where little kids are.
They say “where’s the gun?” — After the shots
Because they don’t realize one of them had already taken it — before the shots
Wow! Congratulations!!
Stephen Colbert on the ICE murder of Renee Nicole Good: “The message from this administration is clear. Only they determine the truth. And when their forces come to your city: obey or die. And if you die, you clearly didn’t obey. This should be an alarm bell for the entire country.”
@sarahkbowen.bsky.social reminds me that the 1980s also saw a frontal assault on the already meager welfare state. So there’s another commonality.
Today seems a good day to unveil my theory that Trump II has us living in a re-boot of the 1980s: increasing great power competition, “greed is good,” drug cartels are the biggest threat to national security, and it’s ok to openly invade Latin American countries.
